Oban to Uig (Skye) - Which route?
We will be travelling from Oban to Uig on a Sunday in September.
I think we have two choices for a route to take: We can go on the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale, or I can go by way of the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh.
If we go by ferry, we have two choices of times to be in Mallaig: around 10 am or 4 pm (there is an even later sailing, too). I am certain that we do not want to hurry out of Oban to catch the 10:00 sailing. But if we wait for the 4 pm sailing, it seems like we'll be late getting to the B&B in Uig, since we'll have to drive almost the entire length of the island. However, this route does give us some time to explore a part of Scotland we've not seen before.
If we go by the bridge at Kyle of Lockalsh, we'll be travelling over area we have passed before, but it is a more direct route and would get us to Uig earlier. We'd still have plenty of time to stop on the way as it tickles our fancy.
One of my concerns with the ferry version is whether it will be difficult to find a place for dinner on Sunday night. By using the bridge route, we should have plenty of time to find something.
We have been to Skye before. This trip we are staying in Uig for a day before taking the ferry to Tarbert. I'd like to pre-purchase ferry tickets now. (I realize that it is probably not necessary. I'm just spreading out the cost of this trip and prepaying when I can.)
So, which route, and why? I can argue with myself over both routes, and I just can't decide.

The 4 o'clock ferry gets you to Armadale by 4:30. From there it is about an hour and a half drive to Uig, if you don't stop along the way. So that is still a reasonable time to get to the B&B.
There is the Ferry Inn and the Uig Hotel, so dinner should not be a problem. There is also a cafe, but they probably close at 5 PM.
The road from Fort William to Mallaig is very scenic, and the ferry crossing has some stunning views. It might be worth being a little late.

I would definitely take the Mallaig route. It's actually shorter driving than the Kyle route as well, but you have a half hour check in and a half hour on the boat.
The Road to the Isles is stunning (if it's not raining).Assuming you're in Uig before 8 you won't have a problem eating. If you're worried about it, book.
