Dear LM:
You don't mention if you will be renting a car or not, but if you aren't renting a car, you can fly into Paris, take a TGV to Bayonne (4 1/2 hrs, which means you can sleep on the train) then take local train, to Biarritz. Bayonne and Biarritz are only 5 miles apart. I will be in the Pays Basque/Bearn region in September. I will do the following: Fly into Paris from Newark, (which I find more convenient than JFK), take the TGV as far as perhaps Angouleme then pick up a rental car and drive south toward Biarritz, et al. If you have the time, you can pick up a car in Angouleme. If not, then pick up a car further south/southwest in perhaps either Bordeaux (closer to Biarritz) or Toulouse and meander toward the Atlantic.
Drop me a line if you need additional advice..
Regards..
Luis

Thank you for both of your replies.
I didn't mention this in my original post, but I am gathering information for a family vacation. And my family is not very "adventurous" when it comes to travel - they want to get to their destination as quickly as possible, and in as uncomplicated a manner as possible.
So if we go, we'll most likely try to fly directly into Biarritz. Though if it were just my husband and I, it sounds like Luis' recommendation would be right up our alley. Ah, another time, I guess.

Dear LM:
I can see that traveling with kids would necesitate getting to Biarritz in a hurry. In any event, upon landing at CDG, I am sure Air France has numerous connecting flights to Biarritz, And..when the kids ask "Are we there yet?", you can reply..Yes!!

LMWW,
I would follow ekscrunchy's advice. Fly on Air France from CDG to Biarritz.
Although the Bilbao airport has better international connections, it's a 1 hr. 40 min. drive (under optimum conditions, knowing the route) from Bilbao to Biarritz. I just did this drive last week.
I've also taken the 5 hr. TGV ride (TGV goes to Biarritz after Bayonne) from Gare Montparnasse to Biarritz.
For a family trip, with those who want to arrive as soon as possible, I highly recommend flying, if price is not an issue.
