Paris to 1 hour east of Bergerac

My wife are planning a trip to France for a wedding. We have to get to Castelnaud la Chapelle (1 hour east of Bergerac) by Friday, September 23. We land in Paris on Tuesday, September 20.

Any recommendations on how to do this? Some friends have suggested renting a car and staying two nights in Tours. Other friends have recommended flying into Bordeaux and then driving from there (2.5 hour drive to Castelnaud la Chapelle from Bordeaux).

We have to get back to Paris by Sunday September 25. We fly out on Monday morning from CDG. Any recommendations on what we should do? Our friends also recommended that we will pretty much need a rental car for the wedding as no matter what, we would need to drive from either Paris or Bordeaux. We also looked into Bergerac and ticket prices from Paris to Bergerac are really expensive.

Four options:
1. Fly to Toulouse and rent a car there
2. Fly to Bordeaux and rent a car there
3. Take the train to Brive la Gaillarde and rent a car there
4. Take the TGV from Paris to Bordeaux or Libourne and rent a car there.

The Brive car rental office is closed on Sundays.

I would do #3

Agree with Stu. Lucky you with such a wedding venue. If they need extra seat fillers, please contact me.

Your quicker way would normally be to catch a train from Gare Austerlitz in Paris to Brive, and then pick up your hire car from outside the station. It's about 1.25 hrs to drive to Castelnaud from there.

But your catch is that the car hire depots outside Brive station (Avis & Europcar) are both closed on Sundays!

So you may have to take a TGV to Bordeaux St Jean from Montparnasse, which is open all weekend, and then drive 2.5hrs from there. It's an hour shorter train ride, so you end up using almost the same time overall to get there.

Their possible travel dates to the Dordogne are Tuesday to either Thursday or Friday. Return is by Sunday - so Saturday would be the best travel day. As I recall, Brive does not offer automatic transmission cars - so if that's what you need - take the TGV to either Bordeaux or Libourne. You can return the car in Brive - which is what we are doing on Sept 24.

We've vacationed in the Dordogne for 10 weeks over 5 trips - and we're returning for 3 more weeks in Sept. We stay in a gite about 5 mins from Castelnaud. I wrote a 20+ page itinerary that describes our favorite villages, cave, scenic drives, markets, gardens, restaurant, etc. If you would like a copy, e-mail me at [email protected] & I'll attach one to the reply e-mail. Do so soon - we leave for France in a couple of days. I've sent around 2,000 copies of my Dordogne itinerary to people on Fodors.

You can also take the TGV from Paris to Bordeaux and then the local TER train to Périgueux and pick up a car there. Or do as rosemary suggested and take a train to Brive. If you end up in Périgueux you're about 45 minutes from Castelnaud. Bergerac, btw, is more than an hour from Castelnaud unless you're a French driver.
