I really enjoyed the Drurer House in Nuremberg. It is very close to the fortress at the top of the hill. Nuremberg will be jammed with people. Trains can get really crowded and rowdy. Don't expect to move quickly, you just go with the flow of the crowd.

I actually may need to buy the ticket in Munich since we are flying into Munich and training to Nuremberg. Is there a way to purchase the tickets while in the U.S. or is it best to purchase when over there?

Check the bahn.de website and see if there are special rates on the ICE/IC trains from Munich to Nuremberg. Otherwise, just buy the Bayern ticket at the ticket machine.

I checked bahn.de and there are no non-stops from Munich airport to Nuremberg. There are non-stops (Ice train) if we go from the munich hbf to Nuremberg. How far is the munich airport from the train station? Thanks!

Both Sbahns (S1 &amp; S8) from the Munich Airport run to the main train station. It is about a 40 minute ride.

you can get info about trains bayern ticket covers by changing date to day or two later than today, time after 9:00, changing means of transport box(left side) to only local transport and uncheck prefer fast connections so it shows takes about 1hr 15 to 2 hrs and 2 train changes to go to rothenburg and Regensburg 1hr 3 min and no train changes. The towns very different. Regensburg is city. Rothenburg is a town but Rothenburg is often difficult to walk because it is jammed with people. I would not go to Rothenburg on weekend.

When you are in Nuremberg, stop by the tourist office. They have a nice guided tour for a nominal fee.
By the way, you will love Romantik Hotel Am Jeosphsplatz. Very charming decor and the breakfast is yummy!

We stayed at the Romantik Hotel am Josephsplatz as well and thought it was great. I think we had room 317, if memory serves. At any rate, I requested a room on an upper floor, facing the street. Our room was quite large actually and we had great windows. In the summer it was good for catching a breeze, in winter it would probably be good for the extra light.

I haven't been to Regensberg, but we did go to Rothenberg and really enjoyed ourselves. It was a toss up between that and Bamberg - so we just went to the train station and chose based on schedule - LOL.

After a discussion this evening, I'm wondering if we need to get the Bavaria Pass??

We are thinking of taking The s-bahn from the Munich Airport to the Munich hbf. From there taking an ice train to Nuremberg. We do plan on making a day trip to Bamberg. We are playing the rest by ear. If we have time, we may make another day trip somewhere. We are in Nurember arriving on Wed and departing on Sunday morning. We plan on doing Bamberg on Saturday. We will need to go back to Munich on Sunday.

We are thinking of buying our tickets as we go. Is it worth getting the Bavaria ticket for the above train rides? If we do train by train purchase, are we throwing away a lot of $$?

Hi Riley, we had tentative plans to stay in Nuremburg, but found out the Toy Fair will be there when we had planned to be there. Most if not all the rooms are booked. It is a no go. I did so want to day trips from there...I am at a loss now.

RileyBug - I'd assume a Bayern ticket would be cheaper for you for your daytrip to Bamberg. There is no need to pre-purchase a Bayern ticket. Just buy it the day you need to travel. The Bayern ticket probably is also cheaper than buying point-to-point ticket from Nuremberg to Munich. Also, the Bayern ticket is good for local transportation in the cites, whereas regular point-to-point rail ticket doesn't.

You can go to DB website to price out point-to-point tickets, as well as check the time schedule of ICE train vs regional train. Whether the $ savings is worth the extra time on traveling, is up to you.

You don´t need to, but it is a very good option especially if you are not alone.

Unless you want to try out the ICE (which is nice in itself - the line to Nuremberg has been recelntly rebuilt to 300 km/h), the way to save money and travel time is to take a bus from airport to Freising (~15 min) and a regional train from there to N&uuml;rnberg. Then you can use the Bavaria-Ticket and save quite some money.

Munich would be a good day trip. Go to www.bahn.de and see what travel times are to nearby cities.
I'm going to the Christmas Markets Dec 5-14, staying in Frankfurt and using a Eurail Pass (that I bought online and got within a week)to get around for my day trips. Individual train tix will add up very quick.

Someone mentioned it is a 40 minute ride on the S-bahn. If we take the S-bahn there is a chance we would miss the 9:05 train to nuremberg (1hr42min) and have to wait for the 9:29 train which takes close to 3 hours. So we are thinking of taking a taxi from airport to hbf in order to catch the 9:05. OUr flight gets in at 7:35am. These times are for use with the Bavaria Ticket.

DO NOT break up your journey in the travel planner. If your starting point is the airport you are interested in the schedules from airport, not from the main station.

If your flight is delayed a taxi won´t help you - why do you think it is faster (in the city) than a train?

I did a search on bahn.de MUC to Nurnberg hbf and I see one train departing at 9:40 arriving in Nurnberg at 12:25 with one change - on Bus,RE. I'm assuming this is the only one that leaves around the time we are looking for. Are we able to buy the bayern ticket at the airport? Does Bus, RE mean that we take a bus then a train? Am I to assume that I can buy the bayern ticket wherever the bus drops us off before we jump on the train? Thanks for your help!
