Hello. I will be travelling to Stockholm alone in mid-November& would appreciate any suggestions as to what to see/eat on my own. Many thanks in advance!

The Vasa Museum is fabulous, and the Nordic Museum right next door is very good. We also liked touring the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan.

I took a trip to Sweden by myself two years ago, there is a ton of stuff to do. Stockholm is a beautiful, amazingly clean, friendly city? I loved it. Definitely go see the changing of the guards (Sat. noonish & Sun. 1 ish) at the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan. Touring the Royal Palace is beautiful, don?t miss the armory and the treasury. The streets of Gamla Stan are great, a bit touristy but there are great restaurants and the narrow streets and architecture can?t be missed. I also loved the National Museum of Fine Art, which has some great works by Carl Larsson and Vermeer, two of my favorites. The Vasa is also fascinating.
I actually stayed in Uppsala and took the train into Stockholm. Uppsala has an awesome cathedral and an interesting castle. It?s also the home of Linnaeus, so the gardens are beautiful. It also has Gamla Uppsala, where there are several Viking burial mounds. It?s well worth a day trip and it?s easy to get to by train.

At least in summer, Stockholm is an undersung, sparkling, beautiful, facinating, good-eating city. I dunno if island hopping exursions would be good that time of year, but surely the pedestrian-only streets in center would still be a joy for shopping, eating, people-watching, and architecture appreciation.

Eating alone, it's more comfortable to use self service, and Sweden has high quality options for this. For ex. in old town there is a chain of dark-wood eateries specializing in ice cream in summer, but has an appealing display case of pastry and heartier foods like lasagne. Near the central market/ped square there is a Thai restaurant which has waiter service at one block, then a self serve on next block (maybe a chain which I've also seen in Paris). Also NE of bus station is a large upscale felafal eatery; all these let you dine overlooking attractive streets.

Visit even the obscure museums, which can be of high quality. Stockholm is like Paris on the water, or an uncrowded Venice - populated with pleasant, attractive people. I can document all my ancestors living in nearby Norway over the last 6 centuries, and can't imagine what kept them from moving to Stockholm!

The tour of the Town Hall (where the Nobel prizes are awarded) is very interesting. Also, the Ridderholm church where lots of the royals (like Jeane-Baptiste Bernadotte, his wife , Desiree) are buried. If you like to eat, check and see when (or if) the Operakalleren (sp?) the restaurant near the opera house is putting on its smorgasboard. You can also take trips by public transport. to Gripsholm and Drottingholm (where the royal family now lives. And there's a fascinatin g old opera house on site.)

I don't thing the changing of the guards will still be an option in Nov. We were in Stockholm in Sept (couple years ago) and that happen to be the last change of guards of the year. It's only a summer - tourist thing. But there are lots of other things to do: Vasa museum, Gamla Stan (old town), tour the City Hall, visit Drottingholm...tons of places. And great food . You'll love it!

I agree with the other writers. Stockholm is probably the most beautiful city in Europe. I am not a museum type guy...but the Vasa museum....don't skip that one

Be sure to check out the Nobel Museum in Gamla Stan which has some great documentaries as well as some interesting exhibits. The Ice Gallery in Gamla Stan is small but unique and the costumes they give you to keep warm are so fun!

Glad to find these messages. I will be in Stockholm for three-four days alone first of July (coming off a cruise.) and I want to see it all!
Can anyone give me an idea of prices? ?Bus fare, lunches, light suppers, etc. and museum fees. Are there senior discounts?
