certainly viola.

in fact, it had come up on my screen that someone had posted a reply there, so you didn't need to hijack this one!

an update on what we actually did.

on the way out, we stopped off at St. Brieuc for coffee and a walk around the market [liked it a lot, though we only stopped for an hour or so, not long enough really] and spent the night here:

http://www.residhotelduguesclin.com/...dex.php?page=1

it was excellent, with a pool and big rooms [we had a family duplex giving us a large lounge/diner, double bedroom and bathroom] apart from its being quite a long walk from the centre of dinan, which as it was very hot, left us hot and red-faced without doing the walk down to the river and back up again!

on the way back, we stopped at Concarneau and stayed here:
Hôtel De L'océan, 2, Rue Plage Des Sables Blancs, Concarneau , 29900 +33298505350. again, we had a "duplex" which this time turned out to be a normal double room downstairs, with a twin upstairs accessed by a very narrow staircase. it was right by the beach [DH and DS very happy] and had a pool [me and DD ditto]. it again was quite a long walk from the town [not helped by the lady on reception indicating that we could easily walk] and as it started to rain on the way down there, we weren't too happy.

Stupidly, I failed to print out this thread and left our michelin red guide at home, so had no town plans [note to self, remember red guide next time] and no idea of decent restaurants in either place, which led to rather disappointing choices in both. we did get to the ville close, but only in the morning! but I'd particularly like to go to Concarneau again, so perhaps next time.

thanks again to all of you for your contributions!
