Well do you already own or are you going to buy or rent skis, poles and specific ski outerwear? Obviously you will need to buy long underwear and apres ski wear for indoors dining/indoor activities, esp including warm snow boots for walking anywhere.

Very warm gloves and hats are very important and for during the day you need heavy duty sunscreen due to the massive amount of glare reflecting off the snow.

If you have not skied before you need to sign up for lessons and I would check with the instructor for details on what s/he reco that you have.

Have you ever been skiing? I'm guessing not or you'd know what you need and what to wear.

YOu need some kind of ski pants and a jacket, of course. You need a base layer (my favorite brand is Smartwool, can't beat it). also. Then I put a very lightweight fleece pullover on top of the base layer, or some kind of fleece-lined active wear top. You need waterproof gloves (Thinsulate lined or whatever), then don't have to be expensive, I've gotten several pair just at a discount store. YOu need ski goggles for sure. In reality, you can sometimes get by with wraparound sunglasses but only if it's sunny, if windy or even a little snow, you need the goggles. I also recommend a fleece neck gaiter of some kind (Seirus sells this kidn of stuff).

You need good ski socks, very important. Again, I like Smartwool, but lots of brands and various thicknesses (I prefer mid-weight).

YOu don't really need a hat for skiing because you should be wearing a helmet when skiing. I do have a very thin fleece balaclava I sometimes wear under my helmet in cold weather, though, some wear light skullcap type things. Of course you'll want a hat for other snow activities are just walking around.

I presume you'll be renting all your ski equipment, you can rent helmets but they are expensive for some odd reason (proportionately). But any place I've been skiing in years rents them.

You can spend a lot of money on this stuff if you've never skiied before. I go pretty cheaply and don't buy expensive brands, get stuff on sale or end of season, at outlets, etc. I don't know where you live, but you can get cheap stuff on sierratradingpost, for example. or last year's models on lots of ski equipment websites (www.skis.com or www.backcountry.com and many others).

I wouldn't buy anything until you've tried skiing and decided whether you like it or not. Hire first.
