Northern Spain Driving Times/ Distances
Hi! (again)
Thanks for all the helpful information in my previous posts-- I am doing all the research I can, but there are just certain things I can't find great answers to. I am not only planning my wedding in San Sebastian, but also planning an itinerary for my family and I for before the wedding.
Can anyone tell me the approximate driving times or distances to the following:
Madrid to Leon
Leon to Bilbao
Hondarribia to St Jean de Luz
Hondarribia to Sare
San Sebastian to the sanctuary of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
Thanks again, all the information I have gotten off searching the forums has been very helpful!

Hondarribia to St. Jean-de-Luz usually takes us under 30 minutes, depending on the traffic.
You should allow 30 to 45 minutes to drive from Hondarribia to Sare, following the back road through Vera/Bera in Navarra, the old smugglers route. That way you'll miss the heavy highway traffic on the main highway using this route both ways.
Allow 2 to 2-1/2 hours from SS to the sanctuary if you follow the coastal route starting at Zarautz. It's worth the extra time. You can return via the A8/E70.

May I point out how cheap it would be to fly from Madrid to Leon and then rent a car? Iberia on line has very cheap advance fares. Leon to Bilbao is a long one, if you took some time, you would go up to Oviedo and then follow the coast, as there is Santander and San Sebastian before you get to Hondarribia. And you can turn in your rent car in Bilbao and fly super cheap to Madrid.
While in Hondarribia, pay 1 euro to ferry over to France, the beach there is absolutely beautiful.
