we're spending the first week of July based in Ratmullan on the north coast of Donegal - my SO wants to know whether a fleece jacket plus rain slicker will be sufficient. or whether a parka is also needed - I know, who can predict the weather? But what do those with experience say?

We were in Donegal in October and a fleece and slicker would have been more than adequate. I can't imagine it wopuld be needed in July. At any rate, layers provide you with the chance to be "just right."

I have found memories of Rathmullen since I was staying at self-catering there on 9-11. The locals were all so accommodating and caring. The people who owned the self-catering house stopped by to see how the Yanks were doing and offered that we could stay as long as we needed (free!) if air-space over the US was closed for a while and we were stranded. They also let us use their laptop to communicate with family. I think you will enjoy your time there.

I really don't think you will need a parka. Though it can be windy on the coasts layering is the best way to go. I did find that a soft, warm scarf was a good accessory.

I'm often in Donegal in July and haven't ever taken a parka, or wished I had. I have used both a fleece pull-over plus a rain jacket, though. It's unlikely to be cold, but you can get cool, damp, windy days, especially on the coast. Of course, you can also get your share of warm, sunny, glorious days!

I was at Malin Head (as far north as you can go in Ireland) in March a few years back. I wore a leather jacket, no lining.

I'd say a fleece and a slicker should keep you warm enough in July.
