Of course you can stay near the Mont on the mainland. Like Lido or Mestre for Venice. Obviously, for many it's fine. I prefer the whole experience and evening with so few people about was the best time for me. Walking to bed was definitely preferable to finding my way to another town, even if it's close.

The stage of the Tour de France mentioned by Underhill is on July 10th. It's an individual time trial starting from Avranches.

that means the night of the 9th people will be camping out and filling up local hotels - night of the day of race all will be gone perhaps.

Just a thank you to everyone for the great information on here! I am planning a trip as well for week 1 September. We are staying at the Hotel Le Relais as we wanted a view of it from afar at night.
