Normandy and Mont-Saint-Michel

Of course you can stay near the Mont on the mainland. Like Lido or Mestre for Venice. Obviously, for many it's fine. I prefer the whole experience and evening with so few people about was the best time for me. Walking to bed was definitely preferable to finding my way to another town, even if it's close.

The stage of the Tour de France mentioned by Underhill is on July 10th. It's an individual time trial starting from Avranches.

Just a thank you to everyone for the great information on here! I am planning a trip as well for week 1 September. We are staying at the Hotel Le Relais as we wanted a view of it from afar at night. Great information - thank you Fodorites for always taking the time to share opinions, answers and ideas!
