People aren't leaving because of censorship, they're leaving because of the hostility and venom that has been in the forefront of this forum. I have no problem with dissenting opinions, but I think that all opinions should be written with thought and rationality. Posts composed entirely of 4-letter words are uninteresting and unnecessarily offensive.

As for the deletion question, I do think that as this is Fodor's forum, on Fodor's site, and can be seen to represent Fodor's (hence the name), they have every right to monitor it. They may have been a bit heavyhanded in their treatment of recent posts, but when people publish posters' addresses and write vitriol-filled posts solely for the dubious pleasure of riling other readers, posts that make no contribution to the subject being discussed (travel or not), especially at such a time of tragedy, I can see why this might happen.

Well said, xxx! I believe you've nailed the reason so many long-timers have left this board. I TOTALLY agree with every word you said.

Me, too, "xxx" and "mmm" -- nail, head, the whole shebang.

I agree with Tony, this 'chop-shop' forum has become lackluster. It seems the Fodors editor has joined the ranks of the holier-than-thou tattlers that want to scrub this board lily white.

Yes, I posted something on a thread about 'how to be unrecognizable as an American in Europe' just yesterday (some priceless advice from a European in fact), and now the whole thread is gone!!! WHY??

Fodors is darned if they do and darned if they don't.

Leave Fodors aside for one mega second... is this the most important thing that is botherting you since September 11, 2001?

Why not volunteer? Take your mind off your "troubles" and thank God that you live in a country where you can attack something that is given to you for FREE.

You ungrateful posters would probably do worse to posters if you were in the Fodors seat.

No, I don't think i'd do any worse. I certainly wouldn't go around deleting posts whenever there was something I didn't agree with which seems to be what's going on here. Actually I'm surprised this post has lasted as long as it has.

I did post yesterday on the 'how to be unrecognizable' thread and my views were plain, harsh and simple. It has since disappeared and I must only assume that someone has disagreed with my comments to an extent that the entire posting has been deleted.

Gigi - I've been in Canada trying to buy a house. Back in Scotland now, good to hear from you.

Phyllis, buy my book when it comes out! (this sentence automatically means the entire posting will be deleted as I'm advertising, right?)

Ah yes, we all knew there'd come a day when Tony would try to sell Fodorites' information back to them. He posted dozens and dozens of individual inquiries on the U.S. forum asking for advice and guidance on every inch of his U.S. trip, only to profit in the future from the helpful willingness of Fodorites. The old posts predicting this outcome are still on the U.S. forum and can surely be dredged up. I believe there was some question as to credit and profit sharing for the future book plans?

Well I did the trip (with Emily) so why I should share profits with anyone is beyond me. I also did some research using lonely planet books - should i give them a share too?

Cant force people to buy the book, stinky.

Well Fodors has just re-santized the Rex thread. Again, if anyone wants the "Full Monty" -- I have it saved as of yesterday sometime.

Tony -- I'll buy one

Within the last hour, the Rudy Giuliani post was sent down the memory hole in the American section. That's the way it goes around Fodorsland. If you are politically incorrect or say something controversial, you will be struck down. I bet this post will be vaporated within 24 hours.

It is true that you have occasional mealy-mouth sorts who whimper that they'd like certain posts taken down. They are sheep...and pretty sorry excuses for human beings. Jelly-spined.

What joy can you people possibly get from bad-mouthing Fodors on the Fodors forum. None of the deleted posts were so scintillating that they would ever be missed except by this small bunch of people who like to look at themselves in the mirror. Let it go, people. I haven't a clue what a cardboard comrade is, but somehow makes me laugh when I think of you bunch--and you know who you are!

OK sickened, how would you feel if the reply you just posted was deleted?(There is also selective deletion of posts within threads going on). I can't imagine you'd be too pleased that you took the time to write something only to have it erased! It's the equivalent of having someone tape your mouth shut so you can't voice your opinion, just because one person doesn't like what you have to say.

I didn't hear anyone bad mouthing Fodors, only expressing frustration and disappointment in their increasing censorship of threads. After all, what's the point of a discussion forum if we aren't able to discuss?

I would just love to be the one who gets to decide what to delete here and what to keep. What intoxicating power!

I'll try to learn more about the payola system before I interview too. For example, does Dr. Ego pay you cash under the table or does he have a special account he uses to ensure that you edit all of his posts in his favor?

Never mind, I'll learn. See you at the interview!

Delete away! I'm not so in love with my prose to think it's immortal! And there is nothing else here I find remotely worth saving. If this thread is typical of the "worthwhile" discussions that are disappearing, please, delete as I write!!! Travel anyone?

Well, whoever is deleting threads doesn't have much of a sense of humor.

Someone posted about whether you could get scissors behind airport security in the U.S. I posted that the only thing you couldn't buy behind airport security was plastic explosives. This was meant as a quip and a jab and the ineffective policies that have been implemented in the name of security.

Bam. Deleted. Just like that.

The people at Fodors must now view us as delicate flowers whose sensibilities must be continually sheltered.

How boring. Some of the funniest threads in Fodor's History would never get off the ground today. Why can't we be left alone to have a good time once in a while?

Maybe I'll start an Airport Security Limmericks thread just to see what happens.

In my opinion, the deletions were totally appropriate.

In fact, this entire thread ought to be deleted.
