No Cafes in the 7th district??
While doing reseach for our trip, I finally found a really nice apartment on the border of the 6th/7th. It's on Rue Casimir Perier, which is right off Rue Grenelle, and very near to Boulevard St. Germain and Rue St. Dominque.
But, from looking at the posts on this board, it seems people say there is hardly any cafes, restuarants, etc. in the 7th??
I was hoping that because we were at the border of the 6th, we would have more restuarants to choose from - it this true?
Are there any patisseries, boulangeries, cafes, markets, or restuarants that are near our apartment??

It doesn't have the concentration of those things you'll find just a few blocks to the east in the 6th, but trust me, you won't starve! There are several of everything there, and it's not far to head a little further to the east for tons of choices. Let me make a wild guess and say you'd probably find 100 cafes and restaurants within a 15 minute walk. I don't think I'm exaggerating.

There is a Monoprix store (dept store and groceries) on rue Grenelle; I think the cross-street is rue du Commerce.
There is a nice brasserie at the corner of avenue Suffren and Motte-Piquet (Brasserie Suffren). There are boulangeries along rue Grenelle, and there is a produce market underneath the metro track a few times a week.
There are at least 1/2 dozen fine restaurants in the 7th listed in "Great Eats" and Zagats guide.
So... I think you will be fine.

There are cafés and restaurants galore in the area! Whose posts have you been reading?
Rue Ste-Dominique has a restaurant or café about every third storefront.
The Place Ecole Militaire is ringed with cafés.
There are countless restaurants and cafés within walking distance of your hotel.
I would not worry.

Poujauran on 20 r. Jean Nicot was mentioned in one tourist guide I looked in, but when I was there I decided not to try it since there was a long queue outside (it was a Saturday morning). So I just went into another one in r. Saint Dominique and it was fine. I have yet to taste a bad pastry in Paris

There is also an outdoor market on Thus. and sat. , that I think is a lot better than the market on Rur Cler...more farmers ,cheesmakers, fishmongers, who just come in for those 2 days. Saxe-Breteuil market on Place de Breteuil, nr the Eiffel Tower.Lots of cafes around there , too

Yes, I found that one by mistake while wandering in Paris that same Saturday. What a lovely market, and neighbourhood as well. I spent that whole day just walking the 7th-6th-5th in that wonderdul city. Just thinking about it makes me happy.

I've been in that MOnoprix and it isn't anywhere near your apt., unfortunately. It's in the 15th arr. and is on BOULEVARD de Grenelle, not rue de Grenelle. There isn't any Monoprix near your apt. (there isn't one in the entire 7th arr. as far as I know). That apt. is near a bunch of government buildings and schools. It's certainly an upscale area, but not where I would choose to stay myself.

I accidentally hit the post -- anyway, I was going to note that the street you name is not on the border of the 6th and it isn't very near most of the areas in the 7th that other posters are talking about (maybe none if I read correctly). It is right next to the Defense Ministry and closest to Solferino metro stop. The cafes etc people are talking about are in the western end of the 7th across the other side of the Invalides.

I looked up the street of the apartment on www.pagesjaunes.fr, and it looks like there is a Franprix at #11. The photo indicates it's a Franprix; the listing calls it something else (C.F.D. Netter) but it falls under the category of 'supermarche'.

Actually it's not that far from the 6th -- a few blocks. The cafes and restaurants I'm talking about are quite close -- and to the east not the west. There are a number of them along rue Bellechase, going towards the D'Orsay, which I'd think can't take more that about 5 or 6 minutes to walk to.
Have you looked at pagesjaunes.fr? You can enter your street address and see actual pictures of the area. I tried for your street and made up a few numbers. It looks like a couple of the places with awnings would be either cafes or patisseries, or something.
Christina is right that it is in the start of a very government-oriented area, but I still say you're going to be quite close to everything you need, if not smack dab in the middle of it. As to "is there a boulangerie near by?" is there a place in Paris where you're not a stone's throw from one?

Travelnut,
You mentioned a Franprix located at #11 - is this near our apartment? I have tried going on the webpage which lists the streets in Paris, but I just wanted a bit more info from people who have stayed in the area.
Our problem is that we have about 3 apartments to choose from: the one near rue grenelle, one off of rue mouffetard, and one in the Marais area which isn't that nice.
I was iffy about the one in the 5th because we aren't nightlife people, and I didn't want to stay in an area where it is noisy at night, or where alot of people are partying till late at night.
I have heard that the 7th is dead at night, but since we are going in the summer, by the time the sun sets around 9pm, we might be heading back to the apartment anyway.
It seems like there are alot of eating places on Rue St. Dominque - is this true?
