I can't think of many (any, really) places on the outskirts of Paris that are on the way to the airport that wouldn't be far more intimidating than the Gare du Nord area. On the other side of Paris, yes, but outskirts on the way to CDG? I wouldn't do it.

About the only place north of Paris with a bunch of hotels is around the Stade de France, which is just one stop from Gare du Nord. Even I cannot imagine wanting to stay there. (Not at all for safety but just because there is nothing going on if there is not an event at the stadium. However, it is a huge office district, so I suppose that a lot of business people need to stay there.)

Ah thanks! That's really good to know.

While I find nothing wrong with staying near Gare du Nord, I would absolutely not stay near any RER station between Paris and CDG. Any RER strike will be announced well in advance allowing you to plan otherwise.

There is no such thing as Paris central. You are either in Paris, specifically one of the 20 arrondissements, or you are not in Paris. It's an important distinction because when residents tell you that Paris is safe, we are not referring to Aulnay sous Bois or one of the other localities north of Paris.

With respect for Sarastro...who is very knowledgeable:

Staying within a 10 minute walk of the three RER B stations closer to the river than Gare du Nord (Chatelet, St-Michel, Luxembourg) makes a trip to CDG just as easy as staying near Gare du Nord...a slightly longer ride, but not by much.

The four areas are different, so taste would be a factor. For instance, St-Michel is near the Cluny museum & ND., Chatelet near the Pompidou and a short walk to the Marais, Luxembourg near the gardens and Pantheon, just to give examples...each area has its advantages.

Once again, it must be pointed out that the OP will have already visited Paris, so we don't know if the family will need to return to areas already seen. They are just looking for a place for the last day, and that is why I find the Gare du Nord area excellent and interesting for them. I know that not everybody will agree (but then again, mostly people who have never stayed in the area and who have "heard" that it is not nice).

Beatlemania mentioned on his other post that he will be in Paris for only a few days. To me - a "few days" is three or less. That may even include the day we're discussing here. You can't see much of Paris in a few days - especially with kids in tow. I would not want to spend one of those "few days" near the Gare du Nord.

Several times we've returned to Paris, taken the RER-B (or taxi) to the Port Royal station, stayed at the Hotel Aiglon or the Jardin Le Brea a few blocks away, wandered in the Luxembourg gardens, strolled down Blvd du Montparnasse, and had dinner at le Dome, Cobea, La Coupole, or La Rotonde. Better "experience" for perhaps a "first timer" to Paris with kids, than the Gare du Nord area, IMO.

BTW, we'll celebrate my wife's 70th birthday dining at le Dome on our "one nighter" in Paris before returning home after a month in Normandy/Brittany.

I don't think that anybody has even mentioned yet that the Gare du Nord area is also super easy walking distance to Montmartre. It's a walk straight up rue de Dunkerque to Anvers.

Kerouac, I suspect that advantage is likely appreciated by few here.

I know. A lot of them think that Montmartre is unsafe, too.

Ssander - you did see the portion of the original question where the OP states that he/she is arriving at Gare de lŽEst? I believe that the OP is interested in simplicity for a final night in Paris, not one that requires the logistics of moving the family to some other area of the city.

There are numerous hotels within a very short walk of Gare de lŽEst for their arrival, yet are just as close to Gare du Nord for their departure the next morning.

Wasn't this the very reason that the OP posed the question in the first place?
