NICE - On the Promonade
My wife and I need a place on the Boulevard de Angelis (waterfront) that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm willing to spend up to $200 per night but the big hotels are in the $300 and up range. Too much for a clean sheet.

We don't need a 5 star place but a nice three would be great. Any suggestions out there?

Sam,
I think you may mean you want to stay on the Promenade des Anglais, overlooking the Baie des Anges, or "Bay of Angels". (This is right on the water.)

I had the pleasure of staying in a fabulous two-star hotel at 101 Promenade des Anglais, called the Hotel Flots D'azur. Rooms were clean, air-conditioned, had TVs & phones & ensuite bathrooms. The hotel had a wonderful, helpful multi-lingual staff. We had a room with a view that looked out over the water. Breakfast is served outdoors on the terrace for a small additional fee, and the view is fantastic. Room rates were quite reasonable. They share a reservation service with some other hotels & have a toll-free phone service of 877-246-9781. When you first phone, you'll hear a French recording--hang in there & it will also be delivered in English. The fax# is 33 4 93.18.56.51.

It's a small hotel, just 21 rooms, very reasonably priced for all you get.

Enjoy!
BC

Sam,

An alternative to Nice proper is a hotel my husband and I found last week. It is in Villefranche-sur-mer which is a neighboring town to Nice (towards Monaco). The hotel is called Ancoraggio, it is very clean, completely newly remodeled, and has killer views of the ocean. It is not on the water but rather up on the hill. The only tricky thing is that you must have a car to reach the hotel (no public transport).

The price is really right--our pretty oceanview rooms were about $80/night. I don't think they have a website but I got an email address for them: [email protected]
or their tel is 04.93.76.67.40.

We liked it so much we extended our stay and spent a day exploring nearby Cap Ferrat and the Villefranche-sur-mer beachfront (went swimming in the Med, of course!).

Wherever you end up staying, have a great time.

Shelly

I stay at the Abela on Promenade des Anglais a few years ago. It was a very nice hotel the rooms with a balcony facing the sea that you can eat on the price was around your price range. I just booked the Sofitel Med. in Cannes for next week, it is a lovely location the cost is $160.00 per night.

My friends stayed twice at the Windsor at the price range you are quoting. I went and looked at the lobby and it looked lovely. It is on the street where you want to be, a few blocks from the Casino and one of the famous old hotels is a block down the beach.
