Nice Hotel and Transportation

We will be in Nice for two days (actually 1.5 days) before a Riviera cruise for our honeymoon. I am not as concerned about price, but rather convenience and the best way to see Nice and a town or two before the cruise. Would you suggest staying in Nice proper, or one of the outlying towns? What about transportation from airport to hotel to port, including how to see the area?

Since there is frequent and cheap train and bus service to neighboring towns, you could stay somewhere other than Nice. But for such a short stay, I'd choose Nice as a central base. You can explore on foot or buy a day pass on the city bus system. If you have a fair amount of luggage, take a taxi from the airport to your hotel. Or take a city bus from the airport to the train station and a taxi from there if you wish to save money.

The Tourist Information Office is right next to the Nice Ville train station. Free city maps and bus route maps.

I recently stayed at The Palais de la Mediteranee, they have a website but I got a better price thru Expedia. I thought it was a great hotel right on the promenade in Nice. Have fun.

The La Pérouse is a very pleasant hotel with a pool, not found in many Nice hotels. From the hotel it's about a 5-minute walk to the Cours Saléya and the narrow, winding streets of Vieux Nice--no need for a car there. The hotel sits next to Castle Rock, along the Promenade des Anglais.

From Nice you can take the train to Villefranche sur Mer, a pretty little village partly on the hill, partly by the beautiful bay. With only a day and a half I don't think you'll be able to see too much else, as Nice itself is worth several days on its own.

Underhill, I am going to be in the Rivera for about 3 days in late Sept. If I stay in Villefranche, would it be a mistake?
I would like to avoid staying in a bustling area-Nice?-and would prefer to take the train into Nice or other places for touristic purposes. Do you know if the trains are near the hotels? WOuld it be a mistake? Thanks.

You could certainly stay in Villefranche instead of Nice. I don't personally know about taking the train, but a friend who rented an apartment there said it was easy to get to the train station and then to central Nice.
