I agree with PBProvence. His first was his best, and one of the best on France. It was repetitions and downhill from there. He should have retired after three, maybe two. But, you know how publishers are -- produce, produce, produce. Quit now Peter before it gets any worse.

Yes, Mimi... What's Happening to Me was his first (in 1975). Before that he was a not-very -successful advertising guy.

I look at this title "What's Happening to Me" at amazon and it came back as a guide to puberty and the author is Peter Mayle. Is this the book you are referring to about France?

Sorry, book is "Provence A to Z". I was just back, jetlagged and bedazzled by Paris, so incorrectly put it in the book title!

Mayle has just received France's Legion d'Honneur.

His first book about Provence was "A Year in Provence" in 1990.
