New German beer brand will raise eyebrows in English-speaking countries
The Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union has admitted a new brand name for German beer: "Fucking Hell". Sooner or later, you will be able to buy "Fucking Hell" beer all over the world. Why not?
There is a small town in Austria, called Fucking. And "hell" is the German word for light lager. For Germans, "Fucking Hell" means simply a light lager beer from the town of Fucking.

BTW, complaints against the brand name had been rejected by the Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union: "The word combination claimed contains no semantic indication that could refer to a certain person or group of persons. Nor does it incite a particular act. It cannot even be understood as an instruction that the reader should go to hell," the Office said in its statement.
I am excited how this new beer brand will be received in England and in the USA.

Living in Brussels, I get quite tired of hearing the word f**k bandied around by non-native speakers who appear to have no idea of how offensive it can be. On the radio, at work, in ads and other printed material... It drives me mad. Not because I am a prude or don't ever swear myself, but just because it is a highly offensive word.
So I think it's ridiculous to call a beer F**king Hell. It's clearly just a massive gimmick/publicity stunt, even worse than French connection's FCUK campaign. And it would put me right off the beer.
I must be getting old...

Hanl, I know what you mean. I really hate the New York Pizza TV ads here in the Netherlands, where every other word is F-ing.
Since it is a German beer company, not an Austrian one, I can't quite see how the claim it comes from the village of Fucking has anything to do with it. pure marketing I'm afraid, and rather distasteful at that.
Kappa, yes there is a village of that name in Austria, and this was actually announced last week, nothing to do with April Fool I'm afraid.

I agree with hanl and hetismij that these sorts of things are annoying. Not necessarily because they are offensive, but because it is so juvenile. You can almost imagine the 12-year old that thought this up giggle to themself. And that tells me that I am not their target market.

G_Hopper, of course you know the word "knob" does not have the same anatomical connotation in the States as it does in the UK.
Here, it is simply a rounded handle, such a that on a cane or doorknob.
