nite nite, Rex... thanks for your intrepid wanderings today. most helpful to all of us, even if you did take some of your secrets to bed with you tonite. i'd say not a bad day, all in all, tho i feel bad for the people who aren't satisfied. i guess i'm happy this forum is so much faster that the other things don't matter as much. ooo

I like the fact that Fodors was apparently totally responsive to the suggestions of the beta testers. I like the courtesy Fodors displayed in announcing the impending changes beforehand. I like the expanded “Search tips” and the elimination of drop down lists for searching. I like the speeded up search results. I like the ability to sort search results. I like the ability to jump from forum to forum with ease. I like the ability to “Jump to most recent posting” and “Mail to a friend”. I like the ability to respond to multiple postings without having to enter my name and Email address each time. I like the ability to hyperlink URLs, particularly the URLs of past postings which should eliminate or reduce the need for topper’s “toppings”. I like the ability to post a lengthy response; something not previously available. The banners seem a small price to pay for a much improved resource. I have no dislikes or significant negatives but do have a thought or two regarding the search capability. It’s apparent that some users of the former search function are confused by the elimination of drop down lists and directives in the frame to do a text and/or place search. I think newcomers to the forum may not recognize the significance of the “flying figure” logo as an enter button and may assume that “Search tips” will lead them to a thread directly. All in all, a job well done and one deserving of thanks and appreciation. Only took two trys without a online beta test that I am aware of. Fodors was very attentive to our comments and also took very seriously all the things the users wrote in about during the brief moments this new version was up in January. I came away with great respect for everyone on the Fodors team from the beta testing. It doesn't mean they're perfect, but they do care about how every last user might be impacted. One of the beta testers thought they were going overboard, but I think you can tell from the last couple of days they probably were right to be as concerned as they were, because everyone has different computers, browsers, browser versions, Web TV, whatever. Dear Ms. e (whoops, I mean X) Thanks for the inside look at how they treated you as a beta tester. But why (are they) so mum in public, here on this forum? Not a word posted - - not even on the grab bag forum. Maybe tomorrow? (a regular "workday" for those who make this their salaried job - - as opposed to those who make it their unsalaried job). Actually, it was the beta testers who requested anonymity. I think Fodors assumed we'd want say who we were, but some of the testers preferred to remain just regular users to everybody on the forums. They didn't want people to think that they thought they were elevated in status. It sort of makes sense if you think about it. But Fodors has mentioned in several places I've seen that there was testing. I think the "changes" letter mentions that there was testing.

I'm not going to hide -- my style is probably pretty transparent anyway. I was one of the beta testers and it is *my* recollection that it was FODORS who asked us to keep quiet so that general fodorite community wouldn't feel left out. The betas were actually running in tandem with the old forums. We'd post using the beta and would appear in both the beta and the old version. So there isn't a whole set of posts out there homeless
