Barcelona--went for the Gaudi architecture and loved it especially the Casa Mila, but otherwise not impressed. I liked Tarragona (just outside Barcelona)better, excellent archaeological museum if you're into that sort of thing, more relaxed. Don't need to return though.

Limited funds/time don't allow for a return anywhere because there are other places remaining on the 'bucket list.' The exception is Greece. Not a city, but I will visit again--most gorgeous natural beauty I've ever seen.

Also, as I get older I'm more drawn to smaller towns. I enjoy seeing large cities, but only for a few days at a time--just personal preference.

I certainly have not been to "every place" in Europe. I'm in Rome as i write this after having been back to Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, and Verona.

I would certainly consider returning to all of them and on our upcoming trip in October we will be returning to London, Berlin, and Venice.

We go back to some of these places for specific activities which are not offered in a lot of other locations.

I'm beginning to like the idea of spending time in smaller cities/towns otherwise. Right now the towns I would probably not return to are Livorno, Civitavecchia, Strasbourg, Helsinki, Rostock, and Tallin.

What a strange question! Surely different people have different reasons for visiting a city, country or site. Looking at some of the places mentioned above only substantiates my view as I would totally disagree on several of them. But, that's me; I am different and so is everyone else.

Having just returned from 4 weeks in England, I can say I will definitely not be returning to York. I wish I had skipped it this trip, but several said I MUST visit (I had been there in the late 80s -- once was enough). It was packed with tourists... and I couldn't wait to leave. I was very glad I changed a 2-night stay to one (in advance). I didn't have the same feeling in Bath. Now that I've seen it, I probably won't return, but I did enjoy Bath much more than York.

However, I loved Yorkshire and Derbyshire and plan to return.

that applies to so many places, IMO - the very things that tourists go to see are impossible to enjoy because of the excessive numbers of their fellow travellers. We felt that Barcelona was particularly afflicted by this and I would need a great deal of persuasion to go there again, whereas nearby Valencia is less visited by tourists and consequently retains both its charm and character.

and the beach is better.

Venice. I was there 50 years ago on my first trip to Europe, and it was a real place, with its own population, great food, and none of the tourist cruise hoards now described. I truly want to go back to that remembered Venice, but the one I hear about now, not so much. It would ruin my memory. Of course, maybe if I stayed away from St marks, and nosed around the outer places . . . Well, no one will criticize me if I try it some day.

But I sure won't go back to Carcassonne.

Portugal...maybe it was the time of year (fall) but we stayed in two different places and found them both fairly boring. No fresh fish to eat either. I am not willing to say I would never go back, but there are many more places higher on my list.

We went back to Carcassonne and were disappointed, with the exception of the castle which had a very interesting exhibit on Viollet-le-Duc. And the town is still very photogenic.

On the other hand, 10 years ago we went back to Venice and loved it as much as we did in 1967. It still has a great market and good restaurants. St. Marks is very touristy as is the Doges' Palace, but the tour of the non-public areas helps in that the number of participants is limited.

Helsinki - went on a day trip from Tallinn. Admittedly it rained all day so that meant that we didn't see the city at its best, but I thought it was kind of dull and depressing. The islands looked nice though. Ended up taking refuge from the rain in a shopping mall and eating re-heated pizza.

Cadiz - Kind of grimy and seedy. Got ripped off in the very first restaurant we visited and that left a kind of sour feeling for the rest of the stay. Nice beach at Playa Victoria though.

Riga - the city has some really interesting buildings, and the Museum of Occupation is grimly fascinating, but the people were so rude and sour. I guess 50 years of communist oppression will do that though.

Paris. Given the amount of homeless people and gypsies I don't get the appeal.

Offenbach. What a dump.

Aberdeen. It's only redeeming quality is that there is a Brew Dog pub there.

While I will be willing to go to any destination that requires a passport,there is only one post that convinced me of a not to go to. The winner is Mazamet posted by StCirq. I will avoid Mazamet like the plague.

Really, really monstrous place. And it takes hours of navigating wild, dangerous, mountainous roads to get there!> We saw the hotel where we almost stayed, the Marechal. We thought about eating there until we saw the menu and prices.

Oxford. Just another college town. It looked no better and no worse than many in the States.Just boring. It looked a lot better in the old Inspectors Morse and Lewis series, but they just kept repeating the same locations.

We took my daughter to Paris this past March and she hated it. She didn't expect to, and was excited about going.
I'm not sure what she was expecting, but - on the day we took the train to Chartres, she turned to me at one point and said, "Now, I like this town. I could spend the rest of the week here."
Hmm.
She said Paris was too crowded (it was),too many smokers, and she said the city was just not very attractive. !!!! [shrugs] I don't get it either. I love Paris, it was my 2nd visit for a week, and I want to go back. Oh well. To each their own....
