Need Venice &Rome Hotels
Hi All,
Our cruise ship in May'08 (Greek Isles Itenarary) leaves from Venice and ends in Rome. We are looking to spend extra days (2-3) before and after the cruise in each of the above cities. Would appreciate any advice on hotels and "must see" sights (we have never been to Europe). Thank you

As far as "must-sees" it's real important that you get a good Venice and Rome guidebook..I like the Eye Witness Guides. Also rent a couple of travel videos of those cities to get a good feel for the layout and of things to do. You can click on "destinations" above and navigate to those 2 cities for a proposed itinerary.

We stayed at the Westin Excelsior in Rome and loved it! If you have Starwood points it is worth using them here. If not it is pretty expensive. We also stayed at another nice place last time we were in Rome, Hotel Ponte Sisto, which was very nice too. Of course nothing like the Westin but much less expensive. It was very clean and close to everything. We stayed at a Best Western property in Venice that was fine. Very clean and close to everything but nothing fancy. I will see if I can find the name for you.

Check the tripadvisor.com recommendations for lodging -- I am writing from Locanda Orseolo in Venice which gets top ratings there and here at Fodors. Where you stay makes a huge difference in Venice I think. We have had nice meals at La Zucca, Masaniello, Osteria San Marco, Osteria Antico, and the like. Get a vaporetto (water bus) pass and take it up and around the Grand Canal and lagoon.
I enjoyed the Bienale (contemporary arts exhibits) at Giardini and somewhat less so at the Arsenale.

We just returned and stayed at the Albergo Del Senato in Rome! LOVED this hotel......the location can't be beat, we walked everywhere! The view of the Pantheon is breathtaking....and the staff was very friendly and helpful! The rooftop bar was lovely too! Can't wait to go back!

We loved La Calcina in Venice. Right on the gorgeous Giudecca canal. Worth the extra cost of the canal view room too. We paid 203 Euro for this room in May (corner, canal front room.) You would need to book soon (it may already be too late) as this place is really popular.
