Need travel advice: Majorca or Ibiza?

Good Morning,

I am a single, 41 year old female traveling abroad for the first time (a little nervous). The first part of my trip will be a breeze, as I will taking a seven - night cruise (Nice, Florence, Rome, Naples, Malta, and back to Barcelona) that leaves from Barcelona on June 7th.

When the ship returns to Barcelona, I have a few more days before I have to return to the States. I'd like to fly to the Baleric Islands - - I'm torn between Majorca and Ibiza. I've been doing a great deal of reading on these islands, and Ibiza and Formentera sound absolutely lovely. A colleague of mine told me that I am "too old" for a visit in Ibiza.

Would anyone have any information for an "old lady" who is interested in traveling to these beautiful islands? I'm interested in: Specific hotel / resort / hostel that is clean, conveinent, not too pricey; What island would be best for a three day visit? I was thinking Ibiza and visiting Formentera (it's only 11 miles from Ibiza) as a day trip - - Any and all suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Thanks.

From what I heard about Ibiza while in Spain is that it is a wild, drinking, drugging, whoring town, partying all nite town.

Ibizia is a a major destination for young budget travelers, primarily from the UK. It is a lot like Ft Lauderdale at Spring Break (or what Ft. Lauderdale was like when you are I were younger, say 1980.) I don't think you would find it the dream destination you are seeking. Majorca would be a better choice.

You might consider staying on the mailnad in Spain and doing the Costa Brava, Algarve, etc. Alternatevely go to Madrid or Toledo.

Also, if you are not spending a lot of time in Barcelona, or want to see more (really great city, hard to see enough) consider staying on in Barcelona. I would get a room at the Hotel Arts on the waterfront(mananged by Ritz-Carlton) and hang out by their great pool; you will feel like you are in a resort and can nip into the city when you want....

I am a 43-year old female who lives in Europe and travels alone a lot. You have nothing to worry about.

I'm 52 and have visited Ibiza four times (the last time was last December). The old town is beautiful, but I've only been there in winter - I'm not sure whether I'd like it in summer. I paid 36 Euros for a room in the Hostal La Marina in December which seemed fine for a room with a shower, toilet and sea view, but they almost certainly charge more in summer. I think the British lager louts go to the resort of San Antonio (Sant Antoni).

Hi

I've been to Ibiza many times over the last 30 years. I am not a druggy 18-30. Well not now !

I enjoy the activity and nightlife of San Antonio, but these days prefer to stay out of the centre.

What remains is a beautiful, unspoilt hinterland with empty beaches if you search them out.

I've also visited Formentera, and would recommend it as a "get away from everything, relaxation" location.

After a few years gap, I'm planning to go back to Ibiza this year. This time by sailing boat. (San Antonio harbour & marina are a little away from the centre !)

Peter
http://tlp.netfirms.com

Ahhh...Ibiza! Great place for certain things - but I'm not sure it's what you are looking for. "Old Town" is very charming and great to spend some time in. There are some great bars and resaurants with rooftop seating that are wonderful views of the city and sea.
I would strongly recommend AVOIDING San Antonio - ugh, scary, dangerous, drunk brits - DO NOT GO HERE AT NIGHT ALONE.
The beaches are wonderful - you have to drive around the island and sample them all, never found one i didn't like.
Ibiza really is about the nightlife though too, and I can tell you firsthand it is crazy and wonderful and a bit scary. It's not about your age - but about you being alone. I think you should try out the clubs if you have companions (that you know WELL), and want to hear LOUD music and want to START your night at midmight - the clubs are not even beginning to get busy til one am. Truthfully, the Formontera and Majorca or Menorca might be better (more picturesque, safe and relaxing). All depends on you!
From an Ibiza and Spain lover!

Don't listen to anyone that says you are too old for Ibiza. I went on my own and took the ferry to Fromentera for a day trip. I stayed at the Royal Plaza hotel in town and it was reasonable with a pool on the roof. I never saw any realy wild night life. If you go looking for it, you will find it. Santa Eulalia is a lovely area if you decide to stay out there. There is a nice beach there. I rented a bicycle on Formentera and had a lovely day. Go to Ibiza and enjoy your trip.

I had a friend same age go to Ibiza but to the northern part of the island and it was lovely for her.

From what I have seen from travel shows...and all us Irish/UK folks have seen Ibiza uncovered San Antonio is like spring break times 10. Nightmare in my opinion.

In both places it probably depends on where you stay. Just research a bit on what you would like to have as amenities and see and do. This should help you choose.
