We will be barging in a self driven houseboat on the Canal Midi for 2 weeks. We will then rent a car and travel from Carcassonne to Paris over a 6 day period. Can anyone reccommend Auberges or inns along the way? We would like to see Toulouse, Bordeaux, Limoges and Orleans on our way to Paris.

Toulouse is a wonderful city--we stayed with friends, but there must be lots of hotels. Try a search on the Internet or go to the wonderful French tourist information site. Another town you might like is Albi, home of one of the most spectacular medieval churches I've ever seen. It was the center of the Cathar movement. This region is just starting to produce a fairly decent wine as well. Enjoy and do check on the tourist info site. They will mail you detailed booklets about any region of France and we planned our entire trip that way.

We are planning a similar trip in October in the Camargue area. Contact the French Government Tourist Office (www.francetourism.com) to request a copy of their 1999 France Discovery magazine, which is FREE.

Carcasonne is great. We were there in January and had the place to ourselves. We stayed at the Hotel Montmorency, which was just across the street from the main entrance to the walled city.

Hope this helps.

By the way, when are you taking your canal trip and which company are you using?

Hi Mary,
To answer your question we are Barging on the Canal Midi from Sept.17 through Oct. 2 on the Connoisseur Cruisers. We did the Canals in Burgandy 4 years ago on the Crown Blue. The reason we switched was that we wanted a rolling canopy so that we would be cruising in "open air" in the warmer climates of the south. What line are you using and where are you cruising?

We are using Locaboat Plaisaince (www.locaboat.com). We will be in the Camargue area (Lattes, Augues-Mortes, Beaucaire, Forques (Arles), Mas des Baumelles (Sts. Maries). This will be a week long trip, and we are so looking forward to it.
