Eileen, Coming from Rome to Chianti it may not be easy to hit Montalcino and the other two cities. Another good tip is the La Grotta next to the San Biagio church, which is only 1 km. west of charming Montepulciano. That will be easier for you to access.

Hi Eileen,

In Montalcino, we had a sensational meal at a tiny place frequented mainly by locals called Osteria di Porta Cassero, via della Liberta, 9. (Phone: 05771-847196).

So far this info is still under wraps because we're still working on the travelogues from our three-week trip to Rome, Umbria and Tuscany last month.

Stay tuned (and read our other Italy travelogues while you're waiting)!

Linda and Don
http://www.thetravelzine.com
TheTravelzine.com is non-commercial

If you're travelling through Montalcino, you'll be very near the Banfi wine estate. If you like wines, I highly recommend their luncheon w/ wines. The menu is preset and changes with the seasons. It is quite an experience and very reasonable. For around $50/person, here's what we had:

-Prunes stuffed with walnuts accompanied by their sparkling wine
-Ribolita accompanied by their Serena Sauvignon Blanc
-Veal filets accompanied by their Tavernelle Cabernet Sauvignon
-Cheese course (reggiano parmesano and pecorino romano)accompanied by their Brunello di Montalcino
-Cookies and sweets accompanied by their Moscadello di Montalcino
--Grappa

Each course came with a full bottle of wine. Wonderful and quite a value. After lunch, we toured the winery with a private guide. You can arrange through their website www.castellobanfi.com. An excellent experience!
