need itinery help please
I will be going to Italy this fall with a friend. I have never been before. In fact, it's my first time out of the US. We will be staying with friends in Gaeta (near Naples)and will be going back there each night except for 2 nights in Rome. This is a rough itinery. Could you please advise? Thanks!
1) Tuesday - Arrive, Gaeta (get over jet lag)
2) Wednesday - Naples
3) Thursday - Pompeii, Herculaneum and Vesuvius (too much in one day?)
4) Friday - Capri
5) Saturday- Sorrento
6) Sunday- Almalfi Coast - bus trip from Sorrento to Positano, then boat back to Sorrento or Naples
7) Monday- ??
8) Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday - Rome and leave Thursday afternoon

I'd suggest a few changes.
- Herculaneum & Vesuvius combine well (- there's a bus service from Herculaneum to Vesuvius) - but adding Pompei is too much.
- Pompei would combine better with Sorrento IMO - you could spend half a day in each.
- For your Amalfi Coast trip I'd include Ravello & Amalfi as well as Positano - travelling via Salerno rather than Sorrento.
Here's how I'd do it:
- train to Salerno
- ferry or bus to Amalfi
- visit Amalfi and nearby Ravello
- ferry or bus to Positano
- jetfoil Positano to Naples
Or you could take the morning Naples-Positano jetfoil and do it in reverse, returning to Formia/Gaeta from Salerno.
For your extra day, good choices would be: Ponza, Ischia, Caserta/Cassino, Procida, Paestum ...
Hope this helps ...

Hi Iro,
I also suggest combining Pompeii with Sorrento.
I also think that Sunday would be a good day to either stay in Gaeta and chill out or visit Naples. The Archaeological Museum and the Capella Sansevero will be open.
The AC road might be particularly jammed on a Sunday.
The Greek ruins at Paestum are well worth a visit. You can train there via Salerno and take the bus back from Salerno to Sorrento, and the Circumvesuviana to Naples.
A ferry ride from Sorrento to Amalfi is a good way to see the AC from another viewpoint.
Have a great trip.
