2 nights in Naples/Amalfi Cost

Hello All,

I have a feeling lots of you will think I am crazy for trying to pull this off, but hopefully you can help!...

We (family of 4) are going to Europe in June for 3+ weeks -- have accomodations set in Rome/Tuscany/Venice/AMS/Paris thanks to many of your great recommendations. We are using FF miles to fly; my son and I are leaving 2 days earlier than husband/daughter. I had REALLY wanted to see the Amalfi Coast on this trip, but just couldn't work it in. So... being that we arrive 2 days early I am hoping to work it out to be there our first 2 days.

We fly LAX to London, arriving on a Sunday morning (couldn't get BA to get us all the way to Rome using miles). So I am thinking we could fly London to Naples right away, arrive around 3, and stay the 2 nights before taking the train to Rome Tuesday morning (when my husband/daughter arrive). Is this crazy? Staying in Naples, is there boat transportation to the Amalfi Coast? (I would rather stay in Sorrento, but being on such a tight timeline thought it would be a bad idea). Are there fairly nice (not expensive, but clean and safe) hotels in Naples close to where the ferries leave from? With good pizza nearly?? (ha ha, my son is 15 and can't wait to eat large amounts of pizza!!!).

Or is this just crazy, should we stay in London instead or maybe go to Florence for the 2 nights and train to Rome from there? Or am I missing a obvious other option?!

Thank you so much for your help!!!

Michele

Hi

I think it's feasible. Don't stay in Naples. From the airport there is a bus to Sorrento (not on the Amalfi coast but very handy nonetheless) - http://www.massalubrense.it/busvari.htm

You didn't mention what you want to see there, but we did a quick trip last year. Maybe when you arrive Naples, you can take the train to Pompeii (30 minutes), see that for 3-4 hours, and then continue by train to Sorrento. Next day you can take in whatever you have time for: Amalfi, Positano, Ravello. Stay in Sorrento and you can use the bus the the ferry system to go to Amalfi and Positano.

Hi Michele - Not crazy at all - it's easy enough to visit the highlights of the Amalfi Coast in one day.

You could stay in Sorrento or Naples.

If you choose to stay in Naples there is a hydrofoil service to the Amalfi Coast (- Positano/Amalfi) in June - so that's a convenient option.

Alternatively if you stay in Sorrento there's a bus or ferry service to Positano/Amalfi.

From Amalfi you can reach Ravello by bus.

You could perhaps find time for Pompeii on the Tuesday morning before you leave for Rome ...

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Hi M,

Your London airport could be important. See www.whichbudget.com from London to NAP.

If you have only a carryon, I suggest taking the bus from NAP to Sorrento.
See http://www.curreriviaggi.it/

From there the SITA bus will take you to the AC.

If you have more luggage than that, hire a driver.

I can highly recommend www.lesirene.com in Praiano.

The SITA bus and the ferries travel between Sorrento and Salerno.

I suggest taking the train to Rome from Salerno.

Enjoy your visit.
