Need help with choosing a location in Valencia
My husband and I will be spending our last couple of vacation days in Valencia, after two weeks in Seville, Morocco, and "somewhere" in Costa Blanca. Valencia is our surname so it will be where we load up on souvenirs for the family, making it ideal to visit at the end of our trip so we won't be burdened with the extra luggage along the way.
My question is about "where" in Valencia should we stay? Is it more ideal to be near the coast? Better in the old town area? Away from both? Somewhere else? We will have had a car previously but would likely drop it off when arriving in Valencia, and are comfortable using public transportation. Our plan is to do some shopping, enjoy some Paella, and basically just getting out and enjoying the vibe of the city.
Any advice or point of view is appreciated.

I like the following hotels near the historic area.
Hotel Astoria AYRE
Hotel Melia Inglés
In the more modern science center area there are several very nice hotels
Melia Opera
AC Avenida de Francia
Tryp Oceanic
On the beach , but this is off the tourist track for visiting monuments you have the very upscale Las Arenas Hotel ( which merits AT LEAST a coffee on its terrace overlooking the fountains) or the Neptuno hotel.
The Westin is a gorgeous hotel in a quiet but well connected area just across the riverbed from "downtown".
I think Marriott has just taken over many of the AC Hotels so if you have points this may be good for you.
Near the America's Cup Port/Formula 1 track you have one of our favorite simple restaurants. "Bar/Restaurante La Aduana". Wonderful salad, grilled calamari, rice and many other flavorful dishes at a correct price.
Have a nice trip.

Thanks for all the hotel recommendations, I will certainly check them out. So would you suggest then...that staying somewhere in the historic area is more ideal for shopping and just walking around and enjoying the vibe of the city? And then maybe venturing off to the port area for a nice dinner?
