If you click on my screen name and scroll down, you'll find our trip report from 2007. Mr. Pickle and I spent 12 days in England and Wales for our 25th anniversary.

Be sure to read the number of times we missed the exit on the roundabout, had to backtrack, etc. and factor that kind of thing into your travel times.

Please don't discount what people are saying about driving times. It always took us longer than AA said it would to get anywhere. Our longest day's drive, from Snowdonia National Park south to Dolgellau, east across Wales to Shrewsbury, then south to the Cotswolds for the night, took us at least 14 hours counting stops and getting lost in a couple of cities (despite the AA directions). By the time we got to our motel, it was completely dark, raining hard, and we were pretty stressed out.

I think I would combine Stonehenge and Bath into a road trip as janisj suggested. Pick up your car at Heathrow and hit the road. Lacock won't take long - it's a charming small town which you have probably seen in a lot of BBC productions, and if your son is a Harry Potter fan, the abbey was used for Hogwarts in some of the early films.

In London, you could combine the British Library and British Museum into one day's visit, as they aren't far from each other. Again, if your son likes Harry Potter, Kings Cross and the sign for Platform 9 3/4 is just down the street from the British Library.

We (40-somethings at the time) really enjoyed Warwick Castle. There are probably cheesy bits, but they would be easy to skip.

I don't know if you've worked on lodging yet, but we found staying at YHA hostels allowed us to meet people from all over the world. Most have family rooms, and you can do laundry and a bit of your own cooking if you like. www.yha.org.uk

Annhig, I understand what you are saying about driving times and wales. I am on the verge of dumping the whole trip there and just doing England and Scotland. Tintern Abbey is a big draw for me as is Brecon Beacons ....Rhayader for my bird enthusiast hubby and son but I think am going to save the time and money and try to get into falconry either in Dunrobin in Scotland or DAhlhousie (or some other place along the way) I never figured we would stay in chester but below it after reviewing the drive times and probably near the waterfalls.

Elendilpickle, I have had a day like your Snowdonia! I am prepared for those days when thing go wrong as long as the car keeps moving and everyone is healthy!
Due to such horrible weather we ended up in Truro Nova Scotia about 3.5 hours late on what should have been a 15 hour driving day from New Jersey....The storm was so bad we only knew we had water on each side of us because of our GPS!

As far as Mad Max, I am considering getting rid of it too...and just driving. so now i need to consider what path to take and what to see along the way and still get to see chester.

Janis and Historytraveller, dont give up on me, I am coming around to the changes. I will work on this for a few weeks and come back and see what you think...
