. Oh.. one more. any suggestion where to drop off the car near Rome? i have not book that accommodation as my transportation is not confirmed. so i am open to suggestion. i know driving into the city is a bad idea. what about one of the airports?>
Orvieto makes a great choice - famous hill town about an hour out of Rome with frequent train service - so if you can drop car there perfect - spend the night in serenely beautiful Orvieto:

I suggest Stresa and Lake Maggiore because it is smack on the main rail line from Switzerland - if coming from Interlaken that is and IME the lake is a nice as any - especially the Borromean Islands neatly being a short boat ride from Stresa.
Last time I stayed there the municipal band was playing at night along the elegant lakeside esplanade. Lots of hotels within a short walk of the train station. Pick up car here when ready to roll and go via Lake Como and or Lake Garda/Verona to Venice.
No big crowds in May like in summer in the Lakes District.

Hi, Guys,
Need additional help (so sorry..)
I am thinking of changing the trip a bit taking the night train from Venice to Rome on 25th evening. Then, on 28th, maybe rent a car from rome to go up to Orvieto and Pisa.
Questions:- is it more advisable for me to take a train to orveito and then rent a car? OR it is advisable i rent a car from Rome self and risk wasting time getting lost in the city?
i hope that is it...
thank you for your help!!!

Night train from Venice to Rome? The trip is about 6.5 hours, meaning you would get less than 6 hours of sleep and leave you in Rome around 6:30 am. And what are you going to do in Rome at 6:30 am? You have a lot of time to kill in a somnambulant state until you can drop your luggage at your accommodation. There is a later night train, but do you really want to get on at 3 am in Venice?
The high speed train does this in 3.5 hours. You have have a full night sleep in Venice and gets you in Rome around the time you can drop your luggage.

I'm all for night trains but to wait in Venice until midnight to board the train is a pain - no problem with early arrival though.
Like greg says take the day train - only 3.5 hours but with the night train you do save the cost of a night in a hotel and 3.5 hours of daylight touring time - the route is not especially scenic either so going at night is not a factor in that regard.

Assuming you want to spend time in Orvieto, I would recommend taking an early train from Venice to Orvieto, see what you want to see and then continue on to Rome by train from there. No point in backtracking! There is a nearby hotel which will store your luggage (but it's up an incline).
This also allows you to take a train directly to Pisa from Rome if you are wanting to do that on another day.
