Need HELP choosing betweeen 3 different rome hotels for HM
I am looking for a hotel for my friend's honeymoon. I am looking for the best hotel within the 250 euro price range. I have narrowed my search to three hotels, but need helping picking between them. Can anyone help?
albergo del senato: (250 euros
for a standard double)
Pros: awesome awesome location, right smack in the middle of everything.
Some rooms has balconies overlooking the Pantheon (might not be included in the standard room). There is a roof top
terrace to hang out at. Many have provided good reviews.
Cons: not the luxury hotel. Expensive for a standard double room.
Hotel Stendhal: (249 for superior double)
Pro: also a great location, next to the trevi fountain and 5 mins walk to the pantheon. Pretty new hotel with modern bathrooms and linens.
Cons: the standard rooms are TINY!!! so you have to get the superior room
unless you want to run into each other. Out of the 20 reviews, 2 of them
were pissed cause they couldn't find their reservations. Therefore you would have to confirm your reservation before you go.
Hotel San Carlo: (180 euros)
Pro: Right by the Spanish Steps, tends to be an expensive area. Not very
expensive for a superior room. I've also emailed them to see if they have a specific room that has it's own personal roof top terrace. Also has many good reviews on this hotel.
Cons: not luxury again. Spanish steps, is in a good location, but not smack in the middle. If you do get the room with the roof top terrace, there is a lot of stairs (4 flights).
Help please!

If you read the reviews here, you'll see the Senato gets fabulous reviews, and the San Carlo gets fewer but many positive reviews. I don't recall any reviews of the Stendhal here (which doesn't mean there aren't any, of course). But based on the reviews, it's hard to see how you'd go wrong with the Senato.

Thank you both for your input. That is true that Sento does have a lot of great reviews, but as eloise mentioned, only the superior and suites rooms has the balconies overlooking the pantheon, and i've read a few places where the standard room was tiny and unimpressive.
San carlo just replied saying that room 59 with its roof top terrace is in fact available. However, the location is a little further back behind the spanish steps... and i'm worried if walking up 4 flights up stairs will get old.
Therefore, I think i am leaning toward stendhal by the trevi fountain. Please let me know if anyone else has any other input.

We stayed at the Albergo Del Senato during Easter week. It is accessible to everything and we walked all over. The staff was fabulous, helpful, and the room was well appointed and well maintained. We stayed in a quad which accomodated 2 adults and 2 teenagers. We did not have a view of the Pantheon and that was just fine because our room was quiet during the evening hours. While the rooftop bar had not yet opened, the well-known Bartender, Michel, was extraordinary. Breakfast at the hotel every morning was more plentiful and the service was outstanding. The next time we go to Rome, without hestitation we will stay at the del Senato.

Swiggle75, a hotel near the Pantheon or the Trevi fountain is a great location. The Spanish steps are a little more out of the way.
In my opinion, having a view of the Pantheon isn't necessarily the #1 factor in choosing the room. Ask the hotel what is the nicest view they have?
Just to make things more complicated, I'm going to mention the hotel that we absolutely loved. It is also near the Pantheon, a short walk from the Pantheon. It is on Piazza Montecitorio, next to the Italian Parliament building. It's called the Hotel Nazionale a Montecitorio. We had a very nice room overlooking the Piazza Montecitorio and the Italian Parliament building, an old and interesting-looking building. the advantage of having a view of the Piazza Montecitorio is that is one of the few quieter piazzas (square) in Rome, because there aren't any restaurants or shops on this square, only 2 hotels and the Italian parliament building. they have a great breakfast buffet. If you look on tripadvisor.com you will find mixed reviews. I have stayed there and we had 2 rooms, and my friend has stayed there many times, and it is my belief that the people who posted the most negative reviews are talking about a different hotel! (there are 2 other hotels with similar names in rome...there's the Hotel Internazionale, and there's the Nazionale hotel, neither of which are on the Piazza Montecitorio!
The good hotel that we stayed at is called the Hotel Nazionale a Montecitorio.
Sorry I don't know the 2 hotels you mentioned but they do have the right locations! What a great neighborhood it is, to be near the Trevi fountain and near the Pantheon...atmospheric, with family-run ristorantes nearby, and great old piazzas.

Had a horrible experience with Albergo Del Senato last summmer. There was no air conditioning in our room and it was about 85 degrees in there so we had to open our window so the noise was horrible from the street. The hotel management did not care. Maid service was bad, we only got clean towels and sheets every third day. Stay somewhere else.

I've stayed at the Del Senato several times and enjoyed it very much. We are returning in July and I have never found the staff to be uncaring. On the contrary, they are some of the most helpful and personable hotel staff I've found anywhere. During all of our stays, the air conditioning worked very well and our room and the entire hotel was kept spotless by the staff. Of the three hotels the OP mentioned, without hesitation I would choose the Del Senato. I wouldn't want to stay "next to the Trevi Fountain" because I would hate to wade through the non-stop crowds congregating in that neighborhood night and day. And I'd hope any hotel next to the fountain had some excellent soundproofing. Four flights of steps would get old in a hurry especially after walking all over Rome.

My experience of the del Senato is pretty much the same as Grinisa. The staff, a/c, cleanliness, everything were wonderful (and my standards are very high). It's hard to square kakiebell's description with my experience and I have stayed there several times, including once with my very picky mother-in-law. She loved it and recommends the del Senato to all her friends. After we spent several days there, she went to Sorrento and on returned stayed at a hotel by the Spanish steps which she hated, largely because of the loud crowds, but also because in comparison to the del Senato she hated it.
Have you contacted the del Senato to see if a balcony room is available? Why not check and see?

Thank you for your replies!! They are very helpful. As many have pointed out, for the location and service del senato sounds to be the winner. However, the room for the rate of 250 euros is for the standard room. I contacted them, and only the superior rooms have balconies. Given that this is my friend's honeymoon, I wanted them to have the best experience they can possible afford. And from many of the posts, it seems that most people who have stayed at senato has stayed in the superior room. Because of this, I am leaning toward Stendhal, because the superior room is the same price as the standard room at senato. Thank you so much for all your help!

I don't know the hotels, but I often operate on the idea that, prices being about equal, I'd rather stay in the best room in a slightly lesser hotel, than the worst room in the more upscale hotel.
by the way, have you looked into the Santa Chiara, also near the Pantheon. I loved the hotel, not top luxury, but very comfortable, pleasant, and convenient.
