Need Florence Info

Going to Florence Italy in May for the first time with a friend. We are staying at the Hotel Ritz? Has anyone stayed there before? Any recommendations on restaurants, cafes, pubs, souvenirs, etc? Does anyone know a specific venetian bead necklace vendor? Where is the best place to shop? What is on the "do not miss list"? Thank you for whatever suggestions and information you can give me.

The David by Michealangelo is the must-see. Gelato at Vivoli's is next. Several years ago you could bargain still on the Ponte Vecchio (covered bridge). Fiesole overlooks Florence and is nice to see.

The David by Michaelangelo is the must-see. Then, Gelato at Vivoli's. I enjoyed the Ponte Vecchio (covered bridge) but I think there are less bargains there. Also, Fiesole overlooks the city and is nice.

My favorite places in Florence? First, go the Piazza Michaelangelo (left over the Ponte Vecchio, right up the hill via the path thru the park). The views of Florence are fantastic, plus there is a copy of the David, in relatively "au natural" surroundings. Second, but certainly not lesser, the Capella dei San Minniato al Monte. (When in the Piazza Michaelangelo looking over Florence, turn around 180 degrees. Take the road and path up to the top of the hill. A wonderful church with magnificent views. I've been to Florence 3 times, and these two fill me with awe everey visit. And I'll be sure to go there my next visit to Florence in 2002.

I am staying at the Hotel Ritz also. Does anyone have any hotel info or know of any good restaurants in the Santa Croce area?

There is a "fiera" close to the Duomo where you can find nearly everything, but you must bargain there.

(Trying again, posted by mistake to another message.)

I have stayed at the Ritz; it's okay. Nothing to rave about but no complaints either. It's fairly conveniently located, and you can get a room overlooking the Arno.

The desk recommended a really good restaurant in the area; I think it was Maremma, or similar name, because they specialized in Southern Tuscan dishes.

Have fun.

Thank all of you for your great info. Can anyone suggest any tours? Has anyone gone to Venice for the day? Any interesting place in Tuscany? We only have a week, but want to do all that we can. Thanks again!
