Need Advice for Austria and more
We plan to fly to Vienna and my initial thoughts are to stay 2 days in Vienna and then take a train to Salzberg and stay there 2 days. Then rent a car and drive into Italy ending up in Rome. Any thougths and suggested improvements will be greatly appreciated. I am planning this trip for Sept., 2011

You don't say how much time you have for your trip. Vienna is a wonderful city, and I'd plan on staying a bit longer, especially considering the fact that you'll be jet-lagged the first day. There's a lot to see there.

I didn't (I should have) state the time because that really isn't important- within reason. If it takes 3-4 days to see Vienna then that is ok. Maybe longer and take some day trips. I am very open to ideas. Thanl you in advance.

I personally prefer Salzburg to Vienna and would spend more time there, exploring the countryside if time permits.
I do agree that the first day is not really to be counted as a full day so if Vienna is important to you, I would allow 3 nights before moving on to Salzburg.

hi doja,
we spent two weeks in Austria last year, starting with 4 nights in Vienna, [which we loved] and then 3 on lake Wolfgang. after that we ended up spending 2 nights in Salzburg which was quite enough for us.
so you will see that opinions are divided about Vienna v Salzburg.
I agree that if you are concentrating on the two towns, you won't want a car until you get to italy.
