Naples to Sorrento -- Train or Boat??

We will be travelling to Sorrento, and I have heard that the train stops too many times and a boat/ferry may actually be better. Any susggestions? Also, where do we catch the ferry from once we get into Naples? Thanks!

We took the hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento in March and it is quite quick and a nice ride. We took the train also, which has a lot of stops, but does not take much longer, maybe 10 mins. longer. I will say the hydrofoil (or ferry) is much more pleasant and was less crowded also. It costs more, but is worth it. We caught the hydrofoil at Molo Beverollo(sp?) port which is near Castel Nuovo at the end of Via Toledo/Via Roma.

Type in "naples and sorrento" in the text search and you will find numerous threads dealing with travel to Sorrento. It has been discussed at length in the last few weeks in particular.

We took the hydrofoil roundtrip from Sorrento to Naples. It was recommended to us by the personnel in the hotel where we were staying. I was asking them if they know what time the train leaves from Sorrento to Naples and they said "Are you crazy? Take the hydrofoil. Its how WE do it". (Of course all of this conversation was in Italian). So we did and actually the scenery was an added bonus!!

If you are merely "passing thru" Naples and are arriving at the Stazione Centrale, take the Circumvesuviana commuter train which leaves every 30 minutes from the underground station at Centrale. This avoids having to take a taxi to Molo Beverello. On the other hand, if you are visiting Naples itself and are in the general proximity of Piazza Municipio/Molo Beverello, take the hydrofoil (which is far less frequent but more enyoyable than the train). Upon arrival in Sorrento, the train is more convenient to most hotels and central Piazza Tasso, whereas the hydrofoil dock in farther away by the port area.

Hi Taia!
Forget about the train from Nap to Sorrento, it's the worst trip someone should have! The train is really full, hundred people breathing on your neck no air conditioned thousand stops.. horrible and scary!
the hydrofoil or the boat are much better! They leave from molo beverelo in naples and they'll take you to Sorrento in 30 minutes..

We've done it both ways and the hydrofoil(aliscafi) is far, far better. No comparison. And if you have never taken a taxi in Naples, it's an experience you will not want to miss. Make sure the driver takes you to Molo Beverello. Sometimes they try to take you to Mergalina which is much farther away.
