Naples to Sicily - ferry or hydrofoil?
Hello,
I am planning to go to Sicily after Amalfi Coast. What is the best way to get there?
I see Tirhennia ferries but take all night, something like cruise ship, 65 eur per person in a cabin, outside with private bath.
Did anybody take it? How good is it? By taking ferry, we save one night hotel, however for 125 eur it should be comfortable and clean.
Are there hydrofoils which go faster from Naples?
Other scenarios (we are in only first planning stage) is to go to Malta from Sicily. Are there ferries to Malta?
If it is, we would just fly to NAP and back from MLA>.
thanks

Em - Tirrenia and Snav operate overnight ferries to Palermo from Naples.
http://www.gruppotirrenia.it/tirreni.../mainframe.htm
http://www.snav.it/
TTT Lines operates the overnight ferry to Catania.
http://www.tttlines.it/index2.htm
Siremar operate the overnight service to Milazzo via the Aeolian Islands from Naples.

The hydrofoil service from Naples runs in high season only.
You can also fly to Palermo or Catania (Alpi Eagles, Volare, Alitalia ... )
Hope this helps ...

Most of the hydrofoils have been replaced by fast catamarans, but they're still dependent on fine weather. If you want to spend a few hours being bounced up and down in a seat, then you could try booking on the fast craft and hope the weather's not too bad. The overnight services from Napoli to Sicily are a much better option in my opinion. Tirrenia's ships on the Napoli-Palermo route are only four or five years old, and will certainly be comfortable and clean. If you book a cabin with a bathroom (you normally get a shower rather than a bath), you won't have a problem.
From Sicily to Malta, there is a small overnight ship run by MARESI (www.ma-re-si.com) and fast ferries (www.virtuferries.com). You should also look at www.grimaldi-ferries.com for services from Malta to Italy.

I took the hydrofoil from Naples to Lipari in the Aeolian Islands and the overnight ferry from Palermo back to Naples last August.
I'm sure it depends on sea conditions but the hydrofoil was very calm. But it was fully booked.
As for the overnight ship, it was indeed a cruise ship. We had a cabin just as you described. It was absolutely fine for a night. It contained bunk beds, a small little dressing table mirror combination and of course a bathroom. The shower was small but had good pressure. I would take it again. It was clean and easy to take.
One thing I would point out is that the ship was not 4 or 5 years old. It seemed to be an old American cruise ship that was redone. All the instructional signs (elevator, how to flush the toilet, etc) were in english only.
My only regret with the overnight ship was not bringing my own food on with me. The cafeteria restaurant was the worst food I have ever had in Italy and it was wayyyy overpriced. Definitely go to a shop in Naples and buy sandwiches, fruit or whatever you want. Well worth it.
