Naples to Positano and back
I would like to take a ferrie or hydrofoil to Positano and back to Naples in late September. It doesn't look like Metro Del Mare has hydrofoil service to Positano this year. The only ferry schedules I've found are in Italian. Can anyone direct me to a website that has english schedules including the one I'm looking for?

Ferries
A hydrofoil ferry service runs from Sorrento to several points:
Ferry Service:
Sorrento to Capri, every 30 minutes in the morning and evening, once an hour mid-day
Sorrento to Naples, every two hours or so
Sorrento to Positano, twice a day direct at odd times
Got this from the SLOWTRAV website-they also said the ferry was not reliable:
"The train to Naples was more reliable. We did not take ferries to Positano or Amalfi, but drove instead. The bus is probably the better alternative, but it is a long ride to Amalfi."

Just found another website for transportation...
But I think you will need to take a bus or rent a car to get to Positano..
When we did it, we rented a car at the Naples Train station from Hertz and drove down to Positano..Make sure to take collision insurance as the Italian drivers are nuts..but fun!

are you doing Positano as a day trip or will you be there overnite or so???
We drove from Naples to Sorrento to Positano on the winding road...and back tracked to Sorrento for dinner , arriving back at our cruise ship at midnite-it was an all day thing.
You may want to hire a driver from Naples all the way to Positano so you can take in the awesome scenery...Car driving ( for an American) is scary--hairpin curves and mopeds darting in and out --along with meeting up with those tour buses along the way..

Catb - If the Metro del Mare direct service isn't running, I'd go via Salerno if I were you.
The Salerno-Positano ferry takes about 70 minutes and costs €6.
You can find timetables on this link:
http://www.salernocity.com/comune/tr...i/costiera.asp
Naples-Salerno by train takes about 40 mins. For timetables:
www.trenitalia.com
The ferry jetty is a 5 mins walk from Salerno station.
Hope this helps ...

We'll be staying in Positano for 2 nights. Do you think Sorrento to Positano by hired driver will give us enough of the Awesome scenery? I thought taking the ferry from Naples to Sorrento and hiring a driver from there might be cheaper. I've seen 80 to 110 Euros for a driver from Naples to Positano. I'm hoping to cut that down with a cheap ferry ride. Besides we want to experience the ferry at least once.

Steve James -- If you take a train from Naples to Salerno, do you then take the ferry from Salerno to Positano? How long of a ferry ride is that?
I also am searching for a convenient way to get from Naples to Positano in mid-October.

Catb - Sorrento-Positano by taxi will cost about €50.
Journey time is about 40 mins. The spectacular part is the final 15-20 mins. as you approach Positano.
Hope this helps ...
.....
CFP - Correct. The ferry ride is about 70 mins. (- with a stop in Amalfi en route). For details:

Timetables change in late season. Services can be cancelled in rough weather, of course ...

Thanks everyone. Ira, I read your trip report from 2003. Loved it. I'm afraid I might suffer the same queasiness as your wife if I spend to much time in a car or bus between towns.
If I can't find a ferry from Sorrento to Positano at a convenient time then I guess I'd rather be in a car than a bus.
SJ, should I reserve a ride or will it be easy to get a taxi in Sorrento?

Hi cat,
Going by bus from Salerno to Positano requires a change in Amalfi.
Sit on the starboard side of the bus. You will not see the drop off, but will see the ocean.
My Lady Wife says that that part was OK.

I too am going to be traveling from Naples to Positano but will be doing it in June. I found the following information btu you will have to call due to the fact this site is in Italian only. Hope this helps.
Port is called Molo Beverello and will stop at Positano
Navigazione Laghi (PHONE: 167/551801 toll-free; 0322/233200) runs hydrofoils from the Molo Beverello to Amalfi and Positano. Additional companies include FS (PHONE: 0766/23273), Siremar (PHONE: 081/5800340), and Tirrenia (PHONE: 081/7201111).

Bummer Kif. I figured as much. Metro del Mare was not showing service to Positano at all but some of the others are. I think you can go from Naples to Amalfi on the ferry/hydrofoil then take the bus. Let me know how it went when you get back. Have a great trip.
