Naples to Lipari - Ferry or Hydrofoil?
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has gotten a ferry or hydrofoil from Naples to Lipari? What would you recommend? Does anyone know of sites where I can pre-book this (for early June).
Many thanks

Siremar and Medmar are overnight ferry services.
Alternatively Ustica Lines runs daytime hydrofoil services. Here's the link:

Fast craft (catamarans or hydrofoils) are run in summer by Alilauro (www.alilauro.it), SNAV (www.snav.it) or Ustica Lines (www.usticalines.it). You will spend half a day sitting in a seat (if it's calm) or being bounced up and down in a seat (if the weather's normal).
Overnight ships are run by Siremar (www.siremar.it). Medmar runs a weekend overnight service with a ship that has no overnight accommodation (www.medmarnavi.it).
There is therefore only one way of of making the journey if you want to travel comfortably.

I took the SIREMAR "traditional" overnight car ferry twice from Lipari to Naples in late May.
I can indeed recommend this service, particularly now that Siremar has substituted the much larger and more modern ships "Palladio" and "Sansovino" on this route: twice a week from October 1 through June 30 and four times a week from July 1 through September 30.
Between mid-June and early October, Siremar now also operates a FAST car ferry ("Scorpio"
which connects Naples with Lipari NONSTOP once or twice weekly in just 4 hours. The cost of the fast ferry, however, is steep, as is the cost of the smaller and bumpier hydrofoils/catamarans operated during the summer by SNAV and Ustica Lines. The "Scorpio" FAST ferry and the hydrofoils/catamarans have only reclining seats (no cabins and no cafeteria).
You usually DON'T need to worry about advance reservations on this route UNLESS you're travelling from mid-June through mid-September. Buying the ticket one or two days beforehand is usually sufficient, unless you must have the assurance of having a sleeping cabin available.
Bear in mind that this route is NOT heavily travelled from October through the beginning of May, and the overnight ferry can accommodate 800 passengers (of which 316 in twin cabins and 200 in reclining seats).
Both the traditional ferry and the FAST ferry are very good-looking ships.
Be forewarned that the hydrofoil/catamaran can be very bumpy (carry dramamine with you).
Motion sickness is USUALLY not a serious problem on the big traditional car ferry.

There have been lots of schedule changes to the ferry and hydrofoil services between Naples and the Aeolian Islands.
Check schedules and fares at:
www.siremar.it (twice-weekly overnight ferry only)
www.snav.it (summer hydrofoil only)
www.alilauro.it (summer hydrofoil only)
Ustica Lines and Medmar Lines have both pulled out of this route.
