Naples, Italy: ideal location for seeing the sights?
If DH and I are able to reschedule our trip to Italy this fall we want to see Pompeii as well as the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples. A day trip from Rome is out of the question so I was thinking we should spend 2-3 nights in Naples, however, I am open to suggestions and curious to know what others have done or would do. We would travel from Rome via train. Thank you in advance.

There is much to see in Naples beyond the archeological museum, but where you stay depends more on what else you want to see besides the museum and Pompeii. You could stay along the Amalfi Coast and travel back and forth to Naples and Pompeii, or you could stay in Sorrento which is centrally located for visiting Naples, Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfitano. Some complain that Sorrento is too "touristy," but frankly the entire area is very, very popular with tourists from everywhere. I won't/can't tell you where to stay, but I would recommend that for only 2-3 nights you stay in one place.

Hi Ira, thank you for the Naples hotel rec. Having read & researched today to the point of crossed eyes I agree Naples is where we should stay given our interests though I must say Sorrento is mighty tempting....

We stayed at the Hotel Excelsior, which was terrific. Our balcony overlooked the bay, with Capri in the distance. You're in the Santa Lucia area, with plenty of restaurants nearby. You'd probably want to take a taxi to the museum.
The prices are fairly high, though, especially now with the unfavorable exchange rate. Still, it's a good splurge in a city where splurging is often advised.
