I'd say a taxi, but I've never tried it.

I took the tram last year (number 1) from Piazza Garibaldi. It wasn't that long. I'd do it again.

I have used the "Alibus" frequently, in fact, every time I am in the Naples/Amalfi Coast area. (I took it in September - 4 months ago) and it costs 3,00 euros per ticket. It leaves from the front of the Naples Centrale Train station (to the R, past the McDonalds). It goes from the train station to Molo Beverello (Piazza Municipio). There are departures every 20 minutes, beginning at 6:00 am daily. Refer to this site for more information(http://www.gesac.it/en/alibus.html

Hi frugaltraveler: There are several companies that offer tours either in a group format or individually in a hired car. I have listed a few that I know of:

1) Curreri Viaggi travel group (contact Salvatore) for individual and group tours http://www.bus.it/curreri/agenziae.htm
I have used Curreri for early morning transport from Sorrento to Naples Airport only, never as a tour guide.

2) limoservicesrome is another option to look into http://www.limoservicesrome.com/amal...eeingtours.htm

3) AP Tours is an option http://www.aptours.it

4) Renato Cuomo has been used by a lot of Fodorites. He provides escorted car tours for the entire area
http://www.cuomonet.it

5) Tours Italy provides another option http://www.tours-italy.com/rome/amalfi_%20naples.htm

6) Odyssey Tours yet another option http://www.odyssey-tours.com/tours/amalfi.asp

If you find that you will be spending time down in the Naples area, it makes more sense to just get a hotel down there for a couple days and cover the attractions in the Campania region. Taking the 6:49 am train out of Rome's Termini station to Naples, then trying to cram Pompeii, Herculaneum, Amalfi Coast, and environs into one day is not feasible. Perhaps you could make Sorrento, Naples, or an Amalfi Coast town your base for 2 nights and then explore the area yourself, without need of hiring a guide and extra expense. It is very easy to take either a boat or SITA bus to the AC towns, also you can catch the local Circumvesuviana train to both the 'Pompeii' and 'Ercolano Scavi'(Herculaneum) stops. The sites are right across or down the street from the station so you could easily walk there. Once there, you can purchase an English-only audio guide (Pompeii) and an English-only paper guide (Ercolano Scavi/Herculaneum). Note that Pompeii takes hours to navigate, it is huge and very spread out. Ercolano Scavi (Herculaneum) on the other hand, is easy to see within a couple hours.

At Sorrentoinfo.com, they offer several one-day and half-day tours of the region. They have a "Green Mini Cruise" on Thursdays only with the Marine Club (www.marineclub.it) that goes to the islands of Ischia and Procida. It costs 21,37 euros/pp and is an all-day trip from 8:30 am-6:30 pm, with pickup and delivery to/from your hotel. There are also half-day tours to Mt. Vesuvius, as well as Pompeii, Capri, etc.

Buon viaggio!
