Napoli is a fantastic place . No more dangerous than any other big city in the world, if you just keep your eyes open. You will love it. Great walking town. Great wine and great food.
Try Masrtroberardino Fiano di Avellino. There are a couple of porno cinemas in town, where you can hook up with locals.
Do a couple of searches perhaps on www.squirt.org for example.

Naples is as dangerous as any large city. Use the same precautions you would use in New York City, Paris, Chicago, or any other large metropolitan area.

I traveled alone to Naples and had no problems there. I am a middle-aged woman and not "athletic looking" (as you say you are), so if I managed okay, you should be okay there also.

The only extra advice I would give for Naples is to be extra vigilent when crossing streets. Motorcycles come out of nowhere, and there seems to be little concern about driving laws (or maybe the laws just don't exist).

Naples is more dangerous than most european cities. Anyone who tells you that it isn't is not being truthful. But its mostly petty crime. Use precaution and you'll do fine. Be especially careful of vespas, and don't carry anything that can be taken by someone on a vespa. It is a beautiful place with many wonderful things to see.

We were just in Napoli (no not Sorrento or the Amalfi, but in the historical city center) for 10 days and had a wonderful time. Yeah, we read all the "warnings" as well. Funny, but the day we arrived, we looked out our hotel (the Neapolis, very, very nice) window to admire the view of the castle on the Vomero hill, and saw someone getting mugged. Beyond that incident, however, we never felt in the least bit threatened or harassed in any way. Common sense goes a long way here, as it does in any major urban area anywhere in the world. Naples was considereably more progressive than I would have thought; there were many obviously gay persons strolling about, and a very active "counterculture" both politically and artistically. Enjoy. -R.
