Naples: Advice on extended stay

My fiancee and I will be traveling to Naples this fall for an extended stay of 6-9 months while she conducts her Ph.D. dissertation research. Any general or specific advice is welcome, particularly in the area of accomodations (i.e. apartments/flats by the month, nice/safe areas of the city to live, etc.). We're naturally concerned about safety, but are also excited by all there is to see and do in Naples and the surrounding areas. I can be reached at [email protected]. Thanks!

Try to find an apartment on the Vomero Hill.

GAC, can you tell me more about Vomero Hill? Is it a nice area? Safe? Affordable? Is it as crowded as the rest of Naples? Just curious. I did a little Internet searching, based on your comment; the area seems centrally located.

It is the area of Naples where the upper middle class live. Buildings date from the turn of the century (or later). Top floors of strategically located buildings have STUPENDOUS views of the Bay, all the way to Capri. Much cleaner, tidier neighborhood (compared to the "old" town"). Access by funicular railway from center of town (Funicolare di Montesanto and Funicolare Centrale). To check out the neighborhood, stay at the Grand Hotel Parker's or the Hotel Britannique next door. According to Frommer's Guide of Italy, the Parker's is the No. 1 hotel in town (they are certainly not much off the mark).
