We've got to stay one night in Naples for an early flight home, but have read so many bad reviews about the city - grotty/unsafe etc. Can anyone give their opinions on the best area to stay, and some hotel suggestions for under 150euros. We don't want our last night to be our worst.

Hello Kate,
Naples is a great city - once you get to know it.
Your best choice is booking a major hotel chain that can arrange airport transportation for you.
With one day, you may want to consider a hotel near the old city (city center). Lots to see with walking as your transportation.
Have a great trip.

While Naples is very backward (I will never forget the time I was driving behind a pickup truck with a bride and groom sitting on dinette chairs in the back--she in white dress and veil, he in white tux with brown socks.) and you can get robbed at knifepoint on the train, I think you will be fine there if you just don't wander around in strange neighborhoods after dark. Naples has fantastic food, the people are friendly, and you will never see so much laundry hanging from people's windows. It is an experience that you should NOT miss.

It's unfortunate that pictures are painted of a frightening experiences that keep people out of Naples. As in any large city, US, Europe, anyplace, you can't wander around with your head in the clouds and be a target. That being said, Naples is a wonderful city, with great people, fabulous food, and wonderlful beauty and culture. Perhaps, because I'm a New Yorker and feel the same agitation when people are afraid of coming to my city, I have limited patience. If you miss Naples, as if you miss New York, you're missing a fabulous experience...
I would stay on the port area; try Hotel Miramare. I've also stayed at the Santa Lucia, which is a bit more expensive, but a bit more centrally located.
Go to Naples, Kate - it's so worth it...

My honest opinion is: that Naples is a fantastic place to visit, pitty you have only one day there. Probably the Band B or a small hotel is a good choice and the owner can recommend you exactly what to do, sea food, pizza, coffee, ...everything is delicious,...have fun, and relax.
