Any advice for a single girl in Campania?
After touring Northern italy with family, I plan to head south for a week in late September. Wondering if Sorrento or Positano may be more accomodating for a solo traveler. Itinerary may include Pompeii, beaches (weather permitting), hiking, and of course the Amalfi drive. Also, has anyone been to Ischia? Thanks in advance for any kind replies!

Steve -- Thank you SO MUCH for all of this information! Based on your advise I believe we will take the train to Salerno rather than Naples, and then take the boat from Salerno (piazza della Concordia) to Positano. Two more questions: (1) do you have any idea how much the boat costs, and (2) how long it takes? Thanks again.

Steve -- You are so helpful.

New wrinkle. My friend is unsure about taking the boat because she says she has a tendency to be seasick.

I guess the alternative would be train to Naples, then commuter train to Sorrento and bus to Positano (which sounds like too much changing); or train to Naples then bus to Positano (are there any direct buses from Naples to Positano & anyone know how long that takes?); or train to Salerno then bus to Positano (ditto?).

Hello Michelle,

Well, - tell your friend from me he/ she's much more likely to suffer from travel sickness taking the bus along the Amalfi Coast than going by boat!
Seriously, though, - when are you going? The sea is like a mill-pond between June and September. I have a slight tendency to get seasick too, - but I've never had the slightest reservation about taking that boat. It's also one of the most scenic boat-rides in the world, - not to be missed!

The alternatives? Well, I don't know of a direct bus service from Naples.

1. The Circumvesuviana train ride Naples-Sorrento takes 65 minutes, then the Sorrento-Positano bus ride takes 40 minutes.
2. The Salerno-Positano bus ride takes 2 hours, with a change of bus at Amalfi.

There is also a direct bus from Rome if that interests you.

Let me know if I can be of more help ...

Steve

I can't thank you enough for all of your advice.

We are going in late August. I will tell my friend that you said the water is calm and that the boat ride is scenic and hope for the best. By the way, is it a ferry-type of boat where you can sit out on the deck, or is it all enclosed like a hydrofoil? I assume it is the latter since you said it is a high-speed boat.

This sounds more pleasant to me than the Circumvesuviana train/bus.

There's only one DIRECT service per day, Michelle, from Rome to Positano (summer service only). It's an early morning departure, leaving from TIBURTINA station in Rome (accessible by metro, Line 'B'). Journey time is about 4 hours 30 minutes.

There's also an afternoon service (NOT Sundays) from Rome as far as Sorrento, leaving at 15.00.

You CAN sit outside on the ferry. Maybe 'high-speed' was the wrong term, - it's not as fast as a hydrofoil, - but it's still quite quick (much faster than the bus!).

Hope this helps ... Buon viaggio!

Steve

Michele: Tell your friend to take ginger pills before the boat ride to avoid getting seasick. This works every time for my husband. Take a couple about a half hour before getting on the boat, and if she starts to feel queasy on the ride, she can take another one. You can buy them almost anywhere they sell vitamins.
Hello Sue,

Yes. There's a hydrofoil to Ischia leaving Positano at 09.15.
The return leaves Ischia at 16.15, or - if that's too early - there's one from Ischia back to Sorrento which leaves Ischia at 17.20. From Sorrento you can catch a bus back to Positano.

Let me know if I can be of more help ...

Steve
