Two not easy destinations. From the Metz/Nancy Airport the only way to Florence seems to be Air France at over $900. Train looks like 12 hours or more and a couple of changes. Car might actually be best - since the drive looks like about 9 hours - esp for more than one person.

Thanks for your quick response which confirmed my research that this is not going to be easy.

Hi MS,

By train www.bahn.de lists an 18:15 train (arr F at 06:46) that requires only one change, in Basel. However, www.voyages-sncf.com doesn't list it if you ask for Nancy/Florence.

You can find it if you enter Nancy/Basel.

Enjoy your visit.

That is a lovely route and it is just a shame to travel through the Swiss Alps during the night.

Do you really need the "fastest" way?

The fastest way might be to take the train to Paris and from there a discount airline to Florence or Pisa.

Checked the cheapy airfares on www.whichbudget.com for intra-Europe flights and only Myair flies from Nancy/Metz to Italy ( only Milan and Venice)...hope you have a great time.

easyJet goes from Orly to Pisa and Ryanair from Beauvais to Pisa. I would use easyJet because the connection to Orly is fairly easy via RER B.

Since the person will be in Nancy, I don't really see the interest of flights from Orly or Beauvais.

How long does is the train ride from Nancy to Paris? That's what I had suggested earlier.

Nancy to Gare de l'Est in Paris is 1h35.

The DB site gives this sort of connection for the train journey direct from Nancy to Florence:

Nancy Ville dep 09:15
Basel SNCF arr 12:08
Basel SNCF walk 10 min
Basel SBB dep 12:27
Milano Centrale arr 17:35
Milano Centrale dep 18:00
Firenze S.M.N. arr 20:45

Total travel time 11h30

Thank you to everyone for your input and especially to Michael. We will probably take the train back to Paris and then fly to Florence. This seems the most relaxing and less stressful way to reach Florence, which is the focal point of our trip.

You could also take the train going east and take a flight from Frankfurt. Lufthansa has 5 flights a day to Florence.

...and there's a train from Nancy to Frankfurt about once an hour.
