Assuming this is a trip to Europe to see sights (not a beach trip):

1. Good walking shoes
2. Good map and/or guide
3. Good idea of what you want (where to go, what to see, how to get around, where to stay, etc.)

Forgot to answer the question: I always feel I'm ready to go anywhere if I have my passport and my ATM/credit card, and a sense of wanting to experience (people, cultures, places, food, you-name-it). The rest of the stuff I can buy anywhere.
