First term journalism students are taught that the formula "5W1H" is the key to their future success. A successful, rewarding, meaningful and memorable trip to Europe is equally dependent upon the planning that results from "5W1H". WHO is going to Europe? WHY am I going? WHAT do I hope to achieve? WHERE am I going? WHEN am I going? HOW do I get to where I want to go and to what I want to achieve? That formula is the essence of travel planning. Whether you answer those questions with a fifteen page minute by minute itinerary for a two week trip or with a dozen key words scribbled on a 3 x 5 card is irrelevant; personal preferences and personality quirks dictate the plan recording method most effective for an individual. What is important is that the six questions be attacked in depth and answered with careful thought.

I had to step away from my desk for a while, so I apologize for not responding. Thank you all so much for the words of wisdom and encouragement. I think that I feel more comfortable about the amount that I have planned. I also believe that one should familarize themselves with the local customs and traditions to avoid making a fool of oneself or offending the natives.

Betsy, Could I e-mail you to find out more about your S. Margherita plans? My husband is very interested in hiking and I would like to know how you came upon deciding which trails to hike. Let me know.

Thanks Everyone!!!!
