Mykonos to Santorini Ferry

We are not traveling until this July, but I already have much of our trip booked. One of the things I haven't booked yet is the ferry from Mykonos to Santorini. We will be traveling between these islands on Sunday, the 17th.

My question is, is it even necessary to book ahead of time, or will we have plenty of options still available to us once we reach Mykonos on the 15th, to just book a ferry once there, a couple days in advance?

Thanks for the help!

Mid-July is the absolute busiest time of the season. Between high demand and high winds there's a serious chance you won't be able to make your connection to Santorini on the 17th if you don't. Booking and schedules for that route aren't available yet but once they are, sometime during or after April, you'll be able to see what your options are if you go to this website: http://www.gtp.gr

You are on another string with me. I am looking for a ferry from Mykonos to Santorini on May 6, 2011 one way. It is not popping up on the sites for ferry tickets. I looked at your link above.

Is it possible that the ferry to Thira from Mykonos does not run that early?

It's too soon for that schedule to be released. Full schedules for May won't be out until April.

If nothing changes from last year you'll have two options.

1- The Hellenic Seaways FlyingCat 4: http://www.ferries.gr/hfd

2- SeaJet from Mykonos to Paros at 10am (40 minutes), then the Blue Star ferry from Paros to Santorini at Noon, arriving at 3pm. http://www.gtp.gr

There may even be a 3rd option, a different morning Hellenic Seaways highspeed ferry from Mykonos to Santorini.

FlyingCat 4 normally begins its season the week before Greek Easter, which is April 24th this year, so yes, it will be running by May 6th. SeaJet 2 begins its runs between Mykonos and Paros even earlier (March), and Blue Star from Paros to Santorini is a daily year-round ferry. The other, FlyingCat 3, is a high season ferry, normally starting its season in mid-June.

In short, Cajuncook, you will have no problem getting from Mykonos to Santorini on May 6th, either with FlyingCat 4 or SeaJet 2/Blue Star. Timetables will be released a few weeks before sailing, and there will be no need to prebook. Buy your tickets when you get to Greece.

Check out www.openseas.gr In the upper right side of the page there's a box to enter dates, ports, etc. When you click on the calendar to enter your date scroll back to same day 2010 and ferries will show. More than likely the schedule for 2011 will be the same but it's too early to check those dates. Example: July 17, 2011 falls on a Sunday. Checking back to 2010 Sunday was July 18th. Ferries running that Sunday from Mykonos to Santorini were:

Hellenic Flying Cat 3 depart 8:45am, arrive 12:20pm.
Hellenic Flying Cat 4 depart 14:55pm, arrive 17:35pm.

Or if you want to take the scenic route where you can savor the view from open deck as you enter Santorini: Mykonos to Paros:

NEL Lines Aqua Jewel depart 7:25am, arrive 9:10am.
Hellenic Flying Cat 3 depart 8:45am, arrive 10:15am.
Hellenic Flying Cat 4 depart 14:55pm, arrive 15:45pm.
Hellenic Highspeed 1 depart 10:35am, arrive 11:35am.
Sea Jets Sea Jet 2 depart 10:00am, arrive 10:40am.

Then you ferry from Paros to Santorini:

Blue Star Blue Star Paros depart 12:10pm, arrive 15:20pm. This is the ferry that allows you to stand outside on deck as you approach Santorini for maximum view impact.
Hellenic Flying Cat 3 depart 10:30am, arrive 12:20pm.
Hellenic Flying Cat 4 depart 15:55pm, arrive 17:35pm.

Hope this helps. I'm sure there will be no problem to get to Santorini from Mykonos as these are 2 of the most popular tourist islands. There will be ferries running.

Chris45ny has a good method to show what ferries might be available on a given day the following year. Use it with care, because ferries are bought, sold, retired, and change routes every year. Were that not the case, it would be easy for ferry companies to publish timetables for a full year at a time. ;-)
