A big suggestion is go with public transit. It is wonderful! You can get anywhere you want, and the "tube" is great. "Tube" is what they call the subway. You definitely need to slow down! I've only been to London, and can heavily recommend the Tower, British Museum, St. Paul's and Westminster. The parks, like the Royal Muse and Hyde Park are a great retreat in the city. Enjoy Evensong at St. Paul's and Westminster, it is beautiful, and free! They usually happen in the afternoon and take up about an hour of time. When I was there, I was able to make it to both in one day. As far as day trips go, I wouldn't recommend it. London isn't known for low priced lodging, so if going elsewhere, just spend the night elsewhere.
One of the best things that will help you out is Rick Steve's Europe or Rick Steve's Great Britain. He has lots of very helpful information. That book rates the sites and is great for helping you plan your trip. Since he updates it by going to the places every year, you can be sure that the information is as accurate as it can get for travel books. Hope you enjoy London and England.
George
