hsv, I worded that poorly. You can attempt to cross a street anywhere, but that doesn't mean cars will stop for you! 
But I haven't crossed every street in the city, so I might be wrong.
Today was a very long and wonderful day in Salzburg! Before I can report on it, I have to head to the lounge...there's a beer down there with my name on it.

scatcat - Wow, 60 times! You are my idol I love Munich too. I have only been to Munich twice and am getting ready for a 3rd trip there this summer. It was practically love at first sight though. I was only in Munich maybe a day when I knew I would be coming back.

november_moon- I have been traveling to Europe since 1983. I fell in love with Munich that year and I go back 2-3 times every year. Just can't stay away! The same goes for Nice. I keep going back.

I'm glad you are enjoying my little report. I am enjoying my trip very much!!
On Wednesday, the hills were alive with the sound of Mr. and Mrs. Seetheworld as we made our way thru Salzburg, Austria !!
We took the U6 to Marienplatz and headed to Hauptbahnhof Central Station where we boarded a DB train to Salzburg. The fare was a reduced rate for travel after 9am for up to a family of 5 all for the bargain price of 31 euros. The train left at 9:42 and arrived at 11:42. The train will be packed at this time (due to the fare savings) so make sure you get to the station a bit early to secure your seats, especially if you are traveling together. I wish I could say that we had a peaceful journey, but unfortunately a woman and her husband (their children were left to sit other places) yakked the whole two hours - not once did she come up for air, lol. We would *see* them occasionaly throughout Salzburg, and I made a point to run the other way!
Once we arrived at the train station, we found the information center and picked up a map. I did no real planning for this little excursion (except I knew I wanted to see the Alps, Mozart's birthplace, and the fortress) - we were going to live dangerously.
From the station we took the bus to the Zentrum (city center) so we could head to the Hohensalzburg Fortress - I lost the map with the lines that take you there (sorry), but the fare is $2 euro per person each way. The round trip via the funicular and fortress entrance fee came to 10.50 euro per person.
The fortress was just okay, but the views from that location were priceless! I got to see me some Alps !! After touring the fortress, DH and I had lunch at the restaurant at the fortress' edge with a wonderful view of the Alps! The food was actually pretty decent and the prices (particularly for that view) were not bad at all. I'm working on a personal best in the beer department, lol. This day was no exception. 
Again, the weather was just perfect on this day (in the 70's!)
We did a lot of strolling through the streets and window shopped along the way. Mirrabel chocolate (with Wolgang's likeness) filled the windows of nearly every shop. I wanted to visit Mozart's birthplace (I guess a very hokey thing to do), but DH and I actually enjoyed this little museum (14 euros for the two of us). It was a little bizarre seeing cardboard Mozarts all over the city though. Before heading back to the train, we stopped at one of the many cafe's for some tea, coffee, and dessert (oh my goodness, the desserts are so good!)
We made one little mistake heading back to the train station -- actually we were just confused...when taking the bus from the train station into the city center, we did not need to purchase tickets, just give the bus driver the money. We got on the bus, expecting to do the same, but we were told we needed to purchase tickets. However, the bus driver was nice enough to just take our money. Just an FYI.
I'm so glad we made this day trip to Salzburg. I hope one day we will get to spend more time in Austria!
That's it for tonight...we have a very early train to Stuttgart in the morning, so I'll have to report on today's doings another time.

The last couple of days have been busy (including some very late nights)...but...
I wanted to add, while I remembered to do so, that our tickets to Salzburg did not have a specified return time - you decide. Currently, the train is returning to Munich every hour on the 9s.

Thanks for the wonderful report! Munich and especially Salzburg are two of our favorite places on earth to visit. We always fly to Munich from Newark NJ (EWR)on Lufthansa, a great airline. BTW, did you know that you can use the Bayern Ticket to go from the airport to Munich using public transportation (Lufthansa bus excluded)? This is a nice cost saving if you are going to use the trams, bus, or Schnellbahn on your day of arrival.
