My family wants to go to Iceland this summer - are we crazy?

Struggling with where to go for family summer vacation (parents, teens ages 14 and 19 who still like to travel with us if it is someplace "interesting"). Live near Boston. We like places with something authentic - not happy for long at Caribbean All Inclusives, for example. Have been to Egypt, Scandinavia (dtr only), Italy, Bermuda cruise and lots of US. Mild-moderate activity level OK - but we are not the type to spend an entire vacation hiking and camping - we want a comfortable hotel and a decent meal at the end of the day.

Oldest kid said jokingly - "let's go to Iceland" Have read some recent posts and trip reports here. But have never met anyone who actually went to Iceland for a vacation - rather than just a stopping off place for a day or 2.

Family has vetoed all of Canada, coasts of Mexico for unknown reasons.

Any comments appreciated. Thanks.

I've been to Iceland three times, once for a full two week vacation, once in conjunction with Denmark, and then for 5-6 days in the fall. It's a beautiful place with unique landscapes, great activities, and world-class hotels. (Oops, sorry, sounding like a tourist board here. I'm not...but I do love this country. It's pretty much #1 of the thirty or so I've been to.)

I was one of the two night visitors. It is quite beautiful, but very, very, expensive. You might want to get lots of info, if your on any type of budget.

I agree with Amy - Iceland is an incredible place.I spent one week there this past March and April. Well worth a visit. There are ways of keeping costs down. I stayed at a B&B and avoided the restaurants. Just went to the grocery store. Kept my food costs to less than $10/day.

I also can't say enough great things about Iceland. It's easily one of my favourite places to visit.

I think it would be an incredible family adventure. The trip from Boston with Icelandair is a reasonably short one. If you had 10-14 days say you could easily do a driving trip around the island and you would see lots of spectacular scenery. Don't worry about camping as there will be B&Bs and hotels for you to stay in and how much walking you do is up to you. In summer you would have almost 24 hour daylight as well.

Do you have an approximate budget for this trip at this stage? That may be the only thing that puts you off Iceland. You may want to work out rough costs first. People say that Iceland is expensive and I agree that the costs can add up but I found that living in London, I didn't find it all that much of a shock.

I'd say, go for it!
