Wow - thank you very much, each and every one of you! Now I'll look into flying into Venice and out of Rome (or vice versa). I've never booked an open-jaw flight but I assume I can do it on-line as easily as round-trip flights. Or do I need a travel agent?
As for Pompeii, I'll check with my daughter. One of the main reasons for this trip in the first place is that she is taking Latin and we thought it would be fun to see Pompeii, where the family in her textbook "lives". But I'll research Ostia Antica to see if it would be similar.
Once again thanks again and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as I start looking into each city...

You have some good advice here already, but I'll chime in on the idea of beginning in Venice and leaving from Rome.
I love both of these places, but you don't have to worry about transportation in Venice - just walking - so you can start the trip without the added pressure of figuring out the transportation system of a new city.
Plus it is so dreamy, it seems perfect for jetlag. Of course, San Marco square in the middle of a summer day is anything but dreamy, but if you get up super early and stay up late (take a nap) you will have some quiet areas and moments to yourself.
Just enjoy wandering in Venice. There is amazing art to see, but the whole city is the art, really.
Pompeii is an interesting dilemma. It wasn't until my 5th or 6th (the last) trip to Italy that I finally saw Pompeii, a dream of mine I just hadn't made happen. It outmet my expectations, but then again, I wasn't there on a hot summer day with a zillion other people.
I would sit down, as you said, and really talk all this out with your family: Must sees, strong interest, maybes. You can't do it all and you want time to hang out in cafes, people watch, just enjoy Italy.

You do not need a travel agent to book an open-jaw flight. On the airlines website they usually have options for roundtrip, one way, or multi-city. Just choose multi-city with two legs. One US-Venice then Rome-US.

totorfan,
(love the movie too, btw)
I also think you need to looking at flying into Rome and out of Venice (or the reverse). Plan on 4 full days in Rome (5 if you do a day trip outside the city) and 3 full days in Venice. I am assuming you actually have 12 full days of sightseeing (13 nights in hotels).
Take trains to get from your starting city to your ending city.
The middle 3 or 4 dsys are flexible and won't have an effect one way or the other. A day to see Florence (1/10 the size of Rome) would be nice.
