We're planning to stay two weeks in the Salzburg/Munich area. We were thinking of one week in Salzburg and one in Munich. I'm having a heck of a time finding any apartments near the old town of Salzburg.

There will be at least four of us and we'll need more room than a European hotel can provide.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have to stay in Salzburg itself? If not, I would suggest the Berchtesgaden area, about 20 minutes from Salzburg. We stayed in a lovely apartment in Schonau and took several trips to Salzburg, as well as the surrounding area. Berchtesgaden is a wonderful little town in a splended setting, and the apartments in the area are very reasonable and plentiful. Just a suggestion.

good suggestions above. I wonder about spending that much time in salzburg (and maybe even munich for that matter). perhaps you are using it as a base to visit many other places. anyway just wondering

We're planning on doing day trips and we'll have our girls with us (ages 5 and 8 at that time).

The full plan is several days in Toulouse visiting a friend, then; one week in Provence; one week in the Cinque Terra area; one week in Venice; one week in Salzburg; one week in Munich.

I had originally wanted to do more, but was told it was better to stay longer in each place with the possibility of doing day trips.

I think a week in either place is too long. Salzburg is good for 3 days; Munich perhaps for 4. The surrounding area is worth a visit.

Particularly in Austria I think you will limit your self too much geographically if you try to come back to Salzburg every night.

I like Salzburg, but there is so much more to see in Austria than just the Salzkammergut.

I woudl agree with the one week in Munich IF you are planning to see it for several days AND take day trips to locations such as Fuessen, Rothenburg, etc.

OK - so are there any good places to stay between the two?

Munich and Salzburg are only about 100kms apart, so finding someplace in between the two of them doesn;t really address the issues raised by people.

Perhaps you could consider staying 4 days in Salzburg, 5 in Munich and then 4-5 north of Munich, maybe in Nurnberg. That would let you have day trips around salzburg and Munich, and see an entirely different area that is just 2 hours north of Munich.

Bamberg, Rothenburg, and Wurzburg are all within 90 minutes or Nurnberg and all worht seeing.

I did spend a week in Berchtesgaden, as mentioned above, in May and loved it, but we like to hike and bike and things like that, and we planned several daytrips, so it worked out well for us. If you are only staying in the immediate area, and limiting the daytrips, then I agree with the above. I personally thought a whole day in Salzburg was enough, as the city isn't that big, but a few days would be more than adequate.

You could consider breaking the time up and spending a few nights around Fuessen. Your daughters would probably love Neuschwanstein castle, and there is enough to see and do around the area to fill 3 or 4 nights. Oberammergau and Mittenwald are nearby and are wonderful little towns to visit.
